Nobody has Stalin's portrait because they are progressive or liberal (whatever that means to anyone). Most people who have Stalin's portrait are most likely Russians, because it's part of their national heritage. In addition, both the time lapse and the lack of deeper historical knowledge causes people to idealize stuff of the past (this is universal phenomena though).

At least if PsT concentrated on the story it was good.

That's all that matters in the end. That you don't have too high of an expectation and have fun, no matter how many issues with a game. For example, I'm going to start Star Control Origins today, and yes, I fully expect it to be a dumbed down chunk of toss derived from the whole Starflight genre. But I need something light, colorful and nostalgic after the slog of Black Mesa's Xen chapter so I hope to have fun. DE doesn't seem like my type of game though. People seem to place a lot of similarities to Planecape Torment here and that definitely wasn't my kind of game.

Varga's explicitly a vulture capitalist interested in hoarding wealth for himself and a handful of others. "Isn't that communism in practice" well yes, but he doesn't pretend to make any kind of pro-worker pitches (in fact doing the opposite, getting rich people to do what he wants by scaring them with tales of Takers coming for their money).

What do you consider a good representation of the genre then?

Games which include all aspects of the genre.
Fallout and Fallout-likes.
BGs, Gothics and Dragonfall are all great games that represent the genre.

PsT is fun but an extreme just like ToEE.
NWN 2 e.g. is a good representation of the genre but a terrible game.

Haven't played DOSes yet but they maybe also fall in this category.

In theory BG2 with ToEE combat and Fallout reactivity would be the perfect crpg.
