maybe abilities could work on recharge timer instead of here just have 4 for this battle

this way you can't spam the shit out of escape on turn based mode and other things like this

I came back to this on turn based just because I like turn based and I beat it

rogues in turn based become ridiculously overpowered I used a rogue barb

yea escape gives you 50 deflection for the turn after you escape so you just warp through the map and destroy everything while negating your primary weakness for the turn

aside from the final boss of rymegards realm my hardest fight in the game was taking the bounty off that former sailor with 3 constructs on the steps in neketaka, if I aggroed her all the guards and some townspeople in the near vicinity would try to kill me, unintended difficulty but kind of fun and challenging

other than that it was a cake walk after level 10 with my build

might replay on a harder difficulty

Escape is purty good in RTwP too.
yea but it's comically game breaking in turn based

at least based on my gameplay

also giving rogue free flanks with that passive

I don't remember that from pillars 1 but that's also extremely op imo

maybe not on harder difficulties as I only beat it on normal

Finally started playing this and it seems quite enjoyable so far (done a few quests in Neketaka). Looks pretty and stuff, but there are a few things I wonder about:

1 - loading times. I'm on a PC (Ryzen 3600, 16 GB RAM @ 3600 MHz 1:1 with Infinity Fabric), RX 570) and I installed the game on my NVMe SSD drive. I was hoping the loading times would not annoy me, but they do, especially because there are so many quests that require me to go from location to location for just a few dialog options. It isn't seriously long, takes 5 to 15 seconds to load, but I noticed there's barely any disk activity once you enter the areas in and out a few times, only high CPU usage. A single core goes to 100% during the loading phase and stays there for the entirety of the process. Are there any tricks to speed this thing up at least a little bit? I recall Sawyer or someone say before release that they optimized the loading times of sub-areas by prefetching them, but it seems this feature never made it in the game...

2 - is the turn based mode any good? Is switching to it by entering 'SetTacticalMode' mid-game safe?

3 - do you have any tips and tricks, like some cool items laying in some hidden chest or something?

4 - is there an option to keep the highlights on? I keep pressing TAB to do this and I ten to sit in a way where I can only reach my mouse ;)

This is so strange. Somebody here said that playing with SSD makes the game load faster and it doesn't bothering them. What is really going on here? Would better GPU help?

Strange that so many people complain about long loading times in this game but I haven't noticed them when I played, and I don't even have an SSD.

Maybe playing the unpatched Witcher 1 and waiting 90 seconds every time you enter and exit some random villager's shack skewed my perception on what long loading times mean.

The SSD makes loading PoE1 and PoE2 several times faster - and when compared to an HDD it's mind blowing fast. However, waiting 5 - 15 seconds to load a second floor of an inn will become an annoyance pretty quick, no matter if it took a minute+ to load from an HDD, because waiting for such a small area to load at all feels kind of wrong.

A better GPU will not help - the loading process appears to be single threaded and uses only a single CPU core. There's no difference between a cheap SATA SSD and a more expensive NVMe disk, because both will read the tiny files PoE games use faster than the CPU can process them.

Well, you get used to better things pretty fast. I remember loading games from tape on the Commodore 64 (without any turbo loader) but I wouldn't want to ever go through that again.

Its not. Unless you want to play a caster or assasin... or better yet, a combination of those (alternatively Black Jacket/Assassin). Then its still trash, but at least you're OP, so can be fun a in a way.

I don't claim to be the smartest man on earth

But why use 2 handed weapons in turn based mode

Based on my limited nonautism enhanced knowledge wouldn't 2 weapons be better unless you're basing it on a meme effect like 25 might or your very specific build

With my barb rogue I used 2 weapons almost the whole game and was getting good damage throughout

What say you curr

Also did anyone else notice xuarip spears have an unlisted sicken effect

I used that to meme through some fights midgame where I was going above my level to soften people up with my shitty tanks

It's actually better to use two-handed weapons because there's no recovery in TB mode.

but wouldn't 2 weapons do more damage

that was my impression looking at the weapon damage stats, accuracy and pen

of course I'm not discounting specific builds can be better that abuse certain 2 handed weapon unique effects

Kind of depends. Usually duals are indeed better. But some classes focus on Primary attacks, which use the right hand only anyway.
Also dual attack damage received a hefty nerf some time ago (something like -35%? - but due to the funky calculation mechanics it actually hurts more).
Two-handed weapons got a slight Pen boost.
Some two-handers tend to have enchants with some aoe impact.

You also might want to use a shield for defense.

I don't remember seeing this -35 percent damage explained anywhere in the game

in first game they just nerfed your accuracy a ton right

whatever, kind of a jank solution

are people who don't follow soyer or the patch notes supposed to know this somehow

Well, its still competitive damage-wise.
And double chance to hit enemy with associated afflictions/debuffs/DOTs.

Its listed in damage bonuses/maluses for both attacks. Well, not 100% sure about Turn Based regular dual attack, but it should work similar to dual Full Attack ability.

As I was right to expect, the game is a lot better with colored and detailed NPC portraits. Watercolor was a lazy quick-and-dirty solution.

The files are in <game root dir>/Pillars of Eternity Data/gui/portraits

There is one big mod on the nexus which replaces some portraits. I already had my own set of portrait replacements, so I merged them with the mod and took out a few of the mod's replacements which I didn't like.

Another little something I've done for myself is a mod that replaces the running animation with a walking animation (like in the IE games) but preserves almost the same speed as running, so you don't have to wait more than you did before. The end result is a lot like in BG/IWD and I really like it. I can publish it if you want to try it or post the code here, it's a small change.
