There are quite a few noticeable improvements in the technical construction of WM1 (not so much in the artistic aspect). First of all, a lot of the unnecessarily drawn out and dreary text of the base game has been drastically reduced. Maybe they figured that if they have nothing to say, it's better to say it with as few words as possible. I agree. Second of all, it has a clear tension arc that culminates in a dungeon romp that feels earned. You have a set-up and a pay off. The "form" if you will is much clearer and not as chaotic as in base game. The scope is much more restrained than the dalliances with the divine of basically the entire franchise outside of WM1, which cuts out the bullshit that plagues PoE in general. If you go do WM1 at an appropriately low level, it has the best combat encounters because you aren't freakishly overpowered yet. These combat encounters start dropping actually cool loot for once too.

The farthest I managed to go in PoE was the end of WM1 and while I agree it generally felt better than the base game (mandatory mention that it's an extremely low bar to clear), I would not say it was some yuge improvement or that it was particularly good, never mind great, in general. I don't really remember the details, but the snow areas with fish people popping from the airholes still felt like the worst parts of BG1 and the dungeon encounters with brilliant design of getting spammed with walking bombs that you had to hit from distance before they exploded for instakill was too high iq for my feeble brian.

Don't forget the instakill traps you cannot detect, bypass, or disarm. I disliked the system too much to invest effort into making an exploity party and found WM1 too frustrating even with a level 13 party. I might try the whole game again on Normal with no scaling of any kind just to see the art. Will use IE mod if still available. If I want to play a challenging wargame I will play Gladius not POE.

Turn based Deadfire on the other hand made it much clearer what was going on and was quite playable. None of this "your priest needs to wear cloth so he recovers in .3 seconds instead of .7 seconds for his next cast."

Is strange how people keep repeating in these threads that White March is better than the main game. I started to think that they say that because most Codexers didn't even bothered with the DLC so they can pretend White March is an improvement since not many are going to dispute it.

One thing that called my attention are the three companions introduced by White March are way worse than the companions you get in the main game. I found them less funny and interesting.
They mean it's a better area and encounter design. But if you only judge it by the companions, they annoyed me as well. I only ever used the Devil.

Obviously. Who fucking plays POE for the writing? Anything decent about POE is in spite of the writing, not because of it. Unless you like trying to figure out why they didn't just call it a dryad instead of a fwpojdgwnfeyrwwyghra.

The worldbuilding had potential, but the languages part felt hollow exactly because the changes to stock fantasy creatures only went as far as the names.

You just don't understand the genius of changing vampire to fampyr. Philistine!
Maybe their long teeth sticking out of their mouth cause some diction issues.

Eight years later and people are still mad at fampyrs (who are similar to but aren't quite like vampires hence the different name).

Yes, Roguey, fampyrs have a PoE souls-based flavor to them, but my point is that nothing memorable is made of their being similar to but not quite like vampires.

They're not games about fampyrs, they're a background detail. You get a fampyr sidekick in Deadfire that a lot of people like.

fampyrs are more like frankensteins than draculas. its a big deal for the aforementioned fampyr sidekick that should have been a full companion instead of aloth.

i don't dislike where deadfire took eder, pallegina and aloth in terms of character development. well it barely did anything with the latter. but i wish fassina, rekke and ydwin were more fleshed out instead of them.

It is a known fact that tasteless faggots tend to roam game threads once any interesting discussion to be had about the game itself is over. You come here, you tell them what they like is in fact absolute dogshit, and they recoil in horror, but thats all they can do.

They repeat the meaningless drivel of "Its not that bad" or "Its better than you remember" or other meaningless platitudes, but facts dont change, game is in fact unplayable shit. The never give you a good argument for why the game is good, in their hearts it is settled than the absolute monstrosity is "good".

See, when this happens it falls on sensible and brave people to tell them "You will never be a woman."

"Give me an old name for a leader of the Gods."
"Woden."
"Great. But this needs to be a queen of the gods, so give me an name of an ancient queen."
"Boudica."
"I got it!"
I swear to god this fucking thing gave me an existential crisis. Everything felt taken to the logical end point of adopting an extremely derivative and generic campaign, everything felt bland and improvised, like 2 autists were discussing which elements "Should be" in a crpg.

The moral quandaries with the golems being one of the biggest fucking offenders. Dnd already did it and nobody cared, why even go there in this fucking shitshow, it wasnt an interesting question, we didnt get an interesting answer, so why even go there?
All over the place there are uninteresting problems with very boring solutions, the game goes the extra mile to keep you from doing creative shit.

I actually like parts of PoE (re: encounter design), but at the same time, this is so on the nose...

It was like a paint by numbers RPG world in many ways, though the Hollowborn thing was interesting.

The game was always good. Became a lot better with the White March. Always said that, always will.

Regardless of what edgy, tastless faggots like you may claim, fighting a crusade over a game you should not care about and should have long forgotten - basing on your posts.

Now they have to be "games about fampyrs" in order to be fleshed out. Come on.

Eeeh.... Somewhere under the Sawyerized D&D 4ed, under the miniscule areas, the gutted Big City, there is a good game. TWM-sized adventures are where it feels best.
