Like all retards, the guy fails to appreciate that art design is what makes graphics good and memorable. Objectively, sure Thief 4 looks 'good' if you just look at an overall scene, and of course it looks 'better' than a town scene in T2 or T1. But that's no praise, as every bloody game looks good now, even the COD games look 'good'. They look fine but are totally forgettable with nothing that stands out. Once I've played a modern game, I struggle to remember any location in it.
But mention 'Down in the Bone Hoard' and not only the hairs on my neck stand up remembering the audio, but I also remember all the creepy crypt decorations, even the hollow eyed angel monuments, never mind the most loathsome zombies ever.

Or more subtly, any nobleman's house where even the majestic portraits have this unsettling 'dead' 'creepy' look about them. This is incredibly hard to explain, but take a look at the wall paintings in nuThief: they look nice and correct...sure, but there is nothing sinister and haunting about them.

This is what good graphics are in a game. Dark Engine games(includes SS2) have IMO the BEST graphics ever. No other games have captured the feel of a world better.

The game doesn't even have dynamic shadows, so that's obviously a technical limitation. What do you mean with the aural identification, though? I thought hearing you could only make enemies suspicious, and they only gave proper chase after seeing you, which makes perfect sense. I haven't tried running over a marble floor while out of sight though, no idea what happens then.

What I mean is, there are many instances of NPC getting suspicious/investigating when you make e.g. sound crossing an hallway close to them, while they are fine with other NPCs (guards, servants) doing the same. Of course that's obvious gameification, but it might have been avoided if they e.g. call out regardless who passes, but are satisfied when the patrolling guard announces his presence by responding (probably using a password or such).
Then again, maybe that is the reason why they like to mutter so much while walking around...

Eh, most of the time that behaviour is consistent with how you'd expect them to act. Someone sneaking about and accidentally making some noise sounds different than someone just casually walking down a corridor. If you're a guard, and your buddy patrols close to you every 20 minutes, you're damn well going to know how that sounds, and immediately detect any abnormalities. Of course, the way it's done in Thief (and every other stealth game) precludes the possibility of just walking down the corridor yourself, mimicking the patrolling guard, but making this possible would be very difficult and complicated, and not really impact the gameplay in a very meaningful way. So I don't think it's fair to hold it against stealth games in general, Thief included.

Can't lie, I'm looking forward to Cyberpunk 2077 mostly based on what they did visually with The Witcher 2, on top of my love for the Cyberpunk PnP game. But I'm not part of the problem, nor do I care if most of the AAA publishers fall on their faces. I buy almost nothing but old PC games and indie games for the past 5 years, I don't demand the latest and greatest. And they're intent on blowing even more cash on even more simplistic, hallway shootarz like The Order 1866 this generation. Unreal.

Making uber-graphix, while hard and expensive from a technical perspective, is easier overall than reversing creative bankruptcy and designing deep or innovative gameplay. The former also sells better in the long run since gamers are the ultimate in spineless, brainless, consumer whores.

Unfortunately, as I pointed out elsewhere the pursuit of graphics is, in its own way, responsible for the decline of innovation in the First-Person genre. The nature of how assets are developed for games today gravely restricts how you can design your levels. Frankly Thief is a series that should not be built in the BSP-aping method you see in FPS's coming out of Unreal, the way assets are created for that is just too restrictive due to time and cost in our post-BSP era.

For all the development hours they wasted with the weird contextual bullshit here, they could have built a really massive city to play around in.

Lighting != art direction.

The lighting in HR is probably the weakest point of the general graphical design though, I'll give it that.

Otherwise, HR is actually a solid design, and, amusingly, it's an older-gen title that has larger levels than Thief while boasting better graphics, design, sound and... well, everything. What gives? Is this like ION Storm all over again, one team making Deus Ex, the other team, Daikatana?

Protip: Don't have teams with the same name both working on a Deus Ex title, and on a title with a direction even remotely similar, because now we have two historical precedents of the second game sucking major balls and being in dev hell.

It's already been stated many times over that Eidos Montreal is at least two teams, one working on Deus Ex and one on Thief. Though to get Thief done on time I wonder if there is some overlap between them.

If you meant that for me, then that's pretty much what I just said.

Overlap would probably be in aesthetic things, since artists that are kept in-house would likely move from project to project. Textures, extra assets, things like that. Coders, would really doubt it, considering the huge rift between performances of HR and Thi4f.

That is not really what art direction is about.

I don't know what makes me happier - fact that an indie game is outselling it or the fact that all that money, after Valve takes its cut, goes back to one guy responsible for the game.

Robbed now more than 20 houses, flats, rooms...and not a single person in them. If only all those homeless people on the streets knew of warm beds in those rooms.

Dreading opening any more windows not only for long and horrible window opening animation but also a load point might be waiting behind it.

Audio is completely screwed up. Walking around the city you might stumble upon two different dialogues - and they both sound just like they are near you. Usually you wont even see who's talking...

Trying to watch it on the YT. Hell, I sincerely plan to never run it. Even getting it from the corsairs is pointless. Not only because it's immoral etc. It's a complete waste of electricity, optical fiber and TIME. Intending to waste time for a game of dung quality, with full consciousness what's awaiting ahead, is a bad sign.

Painful experience.

As if the game alone was not bad enough, another thing gets on the nerves. It's who plays it. Complete dumbfucks spewing bullshit to the microphone rather than mercifully shut the fuck up. Drooling retards you cannot believe they're able to insert the DVD right side to the console. That sort of people which need to involve all the brain cells... to figure out how to GO THROUGH A STRAIGHT CORRIDOR. Sweet Raptor Jesus. Staring at this combination gives me a sudden urge to pull hair out of my head.

From the very beginning, there are all possible hints everything has gone wrong. Not unusual in fuck- ups on a majestic scale... but you're practically bombarded with it. Because that's what welcomes us:

--- A view on the city; suppose it's a poor city. So poor it can't even afford colors. The only colors visible are shades of shit.
--- A pretentious monologue- say hi to nuGarret. What nuGarret mumbles is basically: "I AM VERY CYNICAL AND COOL BECAUSE I STEAL WHATEVER I WANT". Said with voice of sad gay bottom. Which leads us to...
--- A drunken fuck laying on the bed, scratching his arse in the sleep. Of course it's not what we think it is. "Garret" just got through the window to steal drunkard's stuff. Like golden dick rings... fuck, never mind. It's bad enough by being just what you see.

If you spent even a penny on this game, at this moment you should regret your decision. Right fucking now. And it's just the first minute...

Then there's one long, boring tutorial mission. What a mockery. As if this game required any tutorial! So far it seems the entire game is a tutorial.
