Now, CRPGs are not armor damage simulators. They are not meant to serve all your autistic needs regarding damage simulation. That is why a flat percentage based armor system is used, to approximately give a realistic depiction of protection.
Yep; how autistic i an for liking having a .308 armor piercing semi automatic rifle being better to fight heavily armored enemies compared to a 9mm smg and worse vs unarmored enemies. That is too much autism. Fast firing submachine guns should be the best weapon for any situation. Including enemies with power armor, robots, deathclaws, etc. And liking to have to aim in weakspots as a archer on Dragon's Dogma is pure autism. Dragon's Dogma would be far better if arming on weak spots and unarmored parts and dealing with armor got removed /sarcasm
PS : On New Vegas, armor takes damage and doesn't eliminate 100% of the damage. If you fire a 9mm round in a guy with power armor, you will deal almost no damage but will damage him.
TemplarGR is right: marketing helps, but if people love a game it will not need much marketing. If Skyrim was some sort of indie game, I'm sure it would have grown to be far more popular than Age of Decadence could ever hope to be, just like how Minecraft did. Of course no indie dev (in the traditional meaning of the word "indie", as opposed to "massive AAA dev with enough money to publish their own games") would have made a game like Skyrim to begin with, but the point is that a company will spend money on marketing if they think they have a slamdunk on their hands.
The American Left is days away from winning the culture wars. Western RPGs will never again feature straight white protagonists (villains are a given). All games will feature unskippable cutscenes about BLM and Pride, to which you may only click "I agree".
In this most holy of threads blessed by the genial TemplarGR and his holy disciple Sigourn I will let go this most blasphemous thought; I believe the best thing about Fallout 3 is that because of it we got Fallout New Vegas
1) 78 % of adults (including woman) in the world masturbate.
2) 96 % of British men masturbate.
3) 92 % of American men masturbate.
4) 76 % of American woman masturbate.
5) 53 % of American men are open to using sex toys on themselves.
I think range/sniper gunplay is good. Especially if you get sneak attacks and knock enemies down like cans on a fence. I have tried playing Fallout 3/NV/4 using melee and all-out action combat and it was terrible every time pretty much, but stealth indoors and sniping outdoors is relatively enjoyable combat wise.
Minecraft is on in a million. How many simplistic similar indie games failed?
-----------------------------------------
The game market today is extremely larger than on the past and the consumer is far more dumbed down with low attention spam. BG2 was one of the most sold games ever back on 00s.
IMO the two main reasons to the decline are >
Excessive focus on balance - Thanks to the popularization of WoW.
Excessive focus on accessibility - Thanks to the consoles.
When developers tries to makes game that can be played by Teletubbies, and needs to make using a railgun and a kitchen knife needs to be equally effective, is no surprise that they only produce bad games.

Yep; On FL3/4 there are no reason to use bolt action/lever action rifles, since they took so much time to kill a enemy, due armor mechanics, just pick the SMG with highest DPS and never change the weapon or ammo type. On New Vegas, "repeating" weapons are amazing. And IMO in a post apocalypse world, people would use more this types of weapons since :
You waste less ammo.
Contrary to video game believe, is not easy to control fully automatic guns. Mainly light weight ones. I only fired a 9mm automatic SMG once IRL. Anything but short bursts is pretty hard to control. If you see modern conflicts footage like on Falklands war for eg, people using fully automatic weapons generally use on short bursts and the main weapon of Argentine side was FAL, a semi automatic rifle.
They are easy to maintain and more reliable with poor quality ammo. A lever action rifle is extremely more unlikely to jam than a fully automatic weapon.
In modern times, for a everyday urban self defense, a 9mm modern pistol can be amazing. But for a post apocalyptic world, with dangerous creatures, outside of main cities, i would probably own .45-70 revolver and lever action rifle, both who can fire "black powder loads". Other game with amazing firearms is Metro. What i love in particular about Metro is that firearms seems like something that people made improvised in a garage. It applies even to fully automatic ones and they are hard to control if you don't use short bursts.
Minecraft didn't sell big because it was simple, but because it was a game that tackled a few very significant aspects people love:
- Exploring.
- Making your own stuff.
Not many games do both of those, and the way Minecraft did it.
It's important to acknowledge that your personal taste isn't the metric for "what a fun game is". Just as there are many people that find Skyrim fun, there are many people that don't find Age of Decadence fun or wouldn't even give it a try after seeing a trailer for it. It has nothing to do with their attention span or how "dumbed down" Skyrim is. I can follow directions just fine. That doesn't mean I find following directions in Morrowind fun, or that I particularly care about the removal of directions in Skyrim. It's just filler that wears out on the second playthrough once you know where everything is. Likewise I don't care about Skyrim's "dumbed down" dungeons, whatever this means, since Morrowind's dungeons are 1) Much smaller, 2) Their "complexity" can be gauged in a handful paths towards rooms that are barely the size of my own bedroom.
I believe Mincraft was a success because it's basically like playing with Lego but inside a computer. I bet Lego are still annoyed they didn't think about that first!
Minecraft was a success because it offers an utterly unique gaming experience. It's an amazing creative outlet, the PvP is great, and there is a ton of wonder in the game when you're just starting out. Codexers aren't really familiar with online games, but that was literally the biggest reason for Minecrafts success. When you find a great server, it's the ultimate co-op game, whether you're playing with IRL friends or just people you befriend on the server. It has the social aspect of dicking around with your friends on discord/shitbox, while also having a very compelling gameplay loop if you're doing a factions type server with special rules and plugins.
Nothing in gaming compares to besieging and raiding an extremely well built fort of an enemy faction with your friends on discord, trying to strategize and win against another organized group of people. It has real stakes, as often times the armor, weapons, and supplies you have on you are time consuming to gather which makes it high-risk for the attackers, since dying means the enemy gets to keep all their stuff and yours. Similarily, losing the fight while defending could mean the destruction of your entire base and losing out on all of your own materials, whether it be for building or for PvP.
There are tons of different aspects that make Minecraft fun. The one barrier to entry is getting good enough at the game so you can actually compete and keep up with other players, and finding a server that's actually good, as much less people are playing now than say, four-six years ago.
Cyberfunk will be almost rail shooter/platformer and only true rpg element will be ability to create women with penis and men with vagina.
Little addon:
And screw this i just get invitation for alpha insider of Microsoft Flight Simulator and i will tell you, it kills.
After 2 days of playing i could state that all present flight simulators could pack up and fuck off. MFS RULES.
Whole globe to fly with photo accurate scenery plus excellent models and colours, its like flyin for real.
The kickstarter era harmed the RPG genre more than anything else. The market was flooded with overhyped indie trash competing with proper RPGs for monies and gametime, thus creating a bad situation and forcing proper RPGs out of the market.
Don't know about "harmed", but I remember being so pumped for all the possibilities when Kickstarter became a thing because it would lead to refined RPG's made for connoisseurs, instead of low-risk, cookie cutter RPG's published by big guys and made for everyone.
