Planning to start my first run with chem build. Can you give some tips? How fast will I be able to get my first acid pistol? Will I have any problems with ammo? What about cryo and fire pistols? Are they good or I should just stick with acid?

I scoped out the junkyard previously but noped out because I wasn't able to disarm any of the traps or unlock any of the doors. That might have changed now that I'm level 7 + have a jackknife.

I suggest either maxing out lockpicking & hacking or not spending any point on them, but even if you max you will usually still find boxes and doors that are too high of level, just leave a note on your map and come back later.

junkyard has alternate paths that don't require any lockpicking at all, it's only loot you miss out on, but in anomaly mode you'll want to open every box probably

I think I'm not going to be able to do the junkyard at level 7. I can get through a lot of screens but some doors are just slightly too high. I do have lockpick + hacking maxed so I just need another level, maybe two.

I might go away and explore the underrail for a bit before coming back.

Maybe we're finally getting some unique themes for Rail Crossing and Camp Hathor? What happened to Josh Culler tho..

as I said, you don't require lockpicking at all to complete depot A

Gah, I went and gained a level exploring the underrail and I return to the junkyard to find a dog insta-detects me from stealth and aggros every mob in the entire zone.

I was only able to get past this via pure cheese. Sprinted to a nearby shack, chucked a molotov out the door, waited, then cleaned up the remains by firing bursts into queues of mutants and mutated dogs.

Anyway, now much further on and the end is now in sight. I can't say that this level makes any sense to me at all. There's something interesting to it but why the fuck make it so pointlessly hard?

Genuinely skill issue. Junkyard used to be really hard but now it's pretty easy once I figured out my strategy. There is a completely alternative way you can access that area where getting auto-detected won't be an issue, and even if it is, you'll have more time to fight the enemies as they approach you.

What is your effective stealth? What is your armor penalty? Why aren't you wearing a black overcoat to boost your stealth skill?

If you're in combat and leave a zone the enemies will stay aggroed when you come back. Even if it's hours later and you're in stealth mode.
It's a bit weird but I guess it'd be pretty exploitable if you could lose all aggro by leaving and returning.

Skill issue or meta knowledge issue? Anyway, I suppose I am surprised I aggro'd the dog because I wasn't aware of it when I left.

Why no black overcoat: I haven't found one, and I haven't invested in tailoring. Will post my build this evening when I get back from work. (99% sure you're going to tell me it's shite and I should restart.)

That as well. There are a lot of things you can do even if you muck up and get insta-spotted, especially in Junkyard.

I never make Stealth characters in RPGs but UnderRail really feels like its meant to be played with Stealth, at least on the hardest difficulty. So I was glad I did.

Also Ambush was a really fun feat that worked very well and it was easy to identify when it would or wouldn't apply, surprised it's not recommended more.

Here you go. All skills not shown are 0 (or only have synergetic points). Not sure why I don't get some synergetic points in hacking from my electronics skill.

I don't feel like my current build makes the junkyard too hard per se, except for that situation with the dog. I do however think a lot of the junkyard is not fun - lots of save scumming, especially around exploration (eg: opened the wrong door, found 7 muties - quickload time). Previously levels felt less pointlessly punishing.

I am enjoying the game overall still.

Underrail is definitely a bit savescummy, I think anyone who claims otherwise is lying. You will get instagibbed by a sniper crit or similar spike damage quite a bit. That being said, you will definitely get better at improvising - opening a door to find 7 muties isn't an especially challenging or uncommon occurrence, for example. Could be a pleasant surprise, even: a room like that is very easy to carpet bomb with molotovs + crawler poison caltrops, you can probably just walk away and let them kill themselves.

It's not bad, but definitely some wasted points. Your intelligence should be at three as you're not getting any skills that require it. The extra attribute point is worth more than the minor skill point loss. Agility should also be at 6 instead of seven, as the vast majority of your movement points will come from Tabis or Boot Springs, and the extra point doesn't do anything. Dexterity should be at six instead minimum for Grenadier and maybe even seven for Quick Tinkering if you're going down the trap route. If you want to use heavy armor, seven strength is fine as you can keep your strength permanently boosted by eating food, although I've always found that to be pretty annoying and would prefer to just take a hit to my perception and eat food to maintain damage. If you're not interested in heavy armor, than your strength should be at five as that's the threshold required to use sniper rifles and shotguns, and extra strength doesn't do anything for you. As for your constitution, seven would be nice for Juggernaut. It is possible to make a fast moving heavy armor wearer but not with your current attribute point layout. If you're not wearing heavy armor, six Constitution is fine for conditioning and fast metabolism.

Your feats are fine. I'm sure there could have been a few more efficient selections to grab at your current level but it's not really a big deal as long as you eventually grab everything you need to grab.

As is, you don't have to restart, your build should be able to get through everything well enough, although you really need to make sure you get some stealth boosting armor if you're not going to max stealth, as otherwise you're going to have difficulty sneaking past enemies as the game goes on, especially those that are very perceptive (dogs have high detect stealth values for obvious reasons. If you had like ten more skill points in stealth, you probably would have been able to avoid getting auto detected by the dogs).

Underrail is indeed a reload heavy game, but again, the amount that you need to reload goes down once you get better at approaching encounters/dealing with them. That being said, you're going to reload hundreds of times, sometimes close to that many just for a single encounter. It's part of what makes the game's combat so great (just wait, you haven't seen how good it can nget until after you leave Junkyard and your build gets online).

Depot A sucks. I've always cheesed my way through it. Just know that after you finish this part the game opens up a lot more and, in my opinion, gets way better.

Did you accept the Tchortist quest to scout out Faceless Positions? Doing so will immediately turn the Faceless hostile after they do a Thought Control check, unless your will is high enough to prevent mental probing.

No, I haven't encountered anyone else yet.

I think this is a bug.
