Well then, go through the rest of the game and enjoy yourself like a true zoner.
There is nothing left man, i played on the same character since 2017 (with breaks that lasted from few months to year or two but still), its not underrail anymore, this is overrail now.
Doesn't that mean you're essentialy playing on legacy version then? Saves from way back then probably aren't compatible with the latest version. If that's the case then you missed out on a lot of new content, it's a much bigger and more polished game now that it was in 2017.

Probably, though i believe that my progress was slow enough that i was able to catch on the most content from the later updates, for example that core city questlines overhaul. While yes my character started in 2017, from looking at eq and oddities that are on my lvl 10 import from 2019 (i believe that i returned then for the first time to the Underrail, praise Sseth lol) i think by that point i only finished junkyard.
From what i remember during 2019 i certainly finished Arena, earlier doing Hathor and some Foundry Quests, either ignored Oligarchs or i only joined Praetorians and that was it before i focused on Expedition. I finished like half or more content before getting to Horticulture Center and then my progress halved. I have save from 2020, i think it was from that PSI nerf update, i either explored lower caves and lower underrail or actually i did nothing.
In 2021 i finally finished Core City questlines, did most of the sidequests available and fully completed Expedition content, after that i explored Hecate Labs, waterways facility and that lower caves bunker, also i did mutant questline in a separate save and i stopped playing.
And now in 2023 i finally completed the game by doing Upper Underrail, main questline, protectorate quests and thats it.

Is the best thing to do as a total noob to run a throwaway build, learn the systems and then use that knowledge to re-roll? There are jillions of builds around - but I can't decide between them: I have no sense for the game yet.

And am I missing anything by not having the expansion when I start a campaign?

I think I restarted the game 10 or 11 times due to build things when I got a feel and I normally don’t do that

I did half a run(maybe less), then restarted from scratch, after getting a feel for how I wanted to play.

I think I created a character and went with him. In my opinion the only prior knowledge one needs is that you want a character who's able to fight one way or another, granted he is then it'll be fine.

I don't know if I'd call it a throwaway build, but definitely try not to get attached to your first character or two, unless playing on easy or something.

Do what I do: pretend to contemplate a long list of different builds, then 3 weeks later say fuck it, put on your metal armor, pick up your shotgun (AR if no expansion), and mow some shit down.

You'll be fine just reading the descriptions of the stats/using your Fallout experience, and making sure to max out at least one weapon skill and keeping the relevant stats for that skill fairly high. Then put the rest of the skill points into whatever sounds fun. Underrail isn't an inordinately hard game on normal difficulty.

Of course, if you want to go full autism, you can, but it's not necessary.

I beat the game just fine on my first Normal/Oddity playthrough with a sub-optimal build I made as I learned.

its a survivor bias in action. Most of the folks still observing this thread liked char planning most, hence many restarts whenever they realized it wasnt optimal. Myself I remember having few restarts on stabby build over little thing like having dodge/evasion or not.

I couldn't beat the game on normal with an ''unplanned'' build that was basicly crossbow + psyonic + traps + stealth. Skill points distribuited fairly evenly toward physical and mental abilities. I kinda was a jack of all trades but master of none and the final boss wrecked me. That said I was probably underleveled also because I was nowhere near the level cap when meeting the boss; but I doubt that even if I farmed a few levels I would have defeated it.
I just severely lacked damage output, which was never a problem until then because with stealth/traps and crowd control thanks to special bolts and psyonics I always had plenty of ways to deal with enemies, but with the final boss all that stuff kinda flies out of the window, you need to pack a serious punch and hurt him quickly otherwise you just get blasted.

I tried sniper, hammer and knife builds for 60 hours in early access to prepare for 1.0 (went with knife).
It is really worth it to find the build you like.
I would definitely suggest investing enough in stealth, it fits exploration and atmosphere very well.

I finished the first run I started without restarting, the only preparation I had was reading through the feat list and using that to figure out what kind of build I want. Restartitis is a personal issue, build doesn't and won't be optimal on your first run anyways, just enjoy the flaws until the inevitable replay.

You're missing a lot by not having the expansion, it bleeds into base game content hard, all updates since it was released were made with it in mind and is far superior to the base game at this point. I like to say it's like playing Diablo 2 without LoD.

After reading around a bit more I came to the same conclusion. Shotguns are only available in the expansion I think? Stumped a few quid for it and now have it.

Anyway, I'm about 3-4 hours in now, having a very good time with the early exploration quests so it's looking good for me. I'm a basic guns build but am also crafting explosives for the larger groups so I put a few points in throwing. Have had only a little trouble so far, fingers crossed.

it likely depends on build in question. Imagine someone going blind into throwing knives versus cave wizard

Eh, you will just quickly figure out that those throwing knives are probably better if you add an actual melee knife, not like you can't spend a level or two worth of skill points into melee and be fine.

You could probably also do a throwing knife build on your first run and have a not-so-terrible time on normal, it's pretty forgiving and throwing knives got buffed.

Ok I am level 7, playing on oddity XP mode. I scoped out the junkyard previously but noped out because I wasn't able to disarm any of the traps or unlock any of the doors. That might have changed now that I'm level 7 + have a jackknife.

Am I wasting my time if I explore that area now? I have explored the lower caves as much as I can (or so I think) and I've done the prison breakout but I've not really explored the underail area much yet. Should I go there first?

I realise I'm about 8 years late but 10/10 game so far. I love the stealth system.

I recommend following the main quest as it'll take you to almost all the areas you need to see and are worth exploring. Just keep your eyes peeled for hidden or relevant areas. And yes, the game is fucking amazing, you have much more to see and enjoy. Just a tip, don't blow off the mysterious dude with a cough.

Same here, just threw points into whatever seemed useful at a given moment. Speaks a lot about how well this game was made.
