Well, it looks pretty promising.

So far this looks by far like the best first person melee combat yet. I really hope they pull it off.

First to be actually a good representation of medieval combat that's for sure. I was starting to think this was impossible after all the 3 turds paradox came up with.
Hopefully this will put M&B to shame in the eyes of anyone but their hardcore fans.

The long awaited combat video :

Would only add for clearance that "hold button to defend" is very ineffective way of fighting in the game (you get tired very quickly) so it should be used only in desperate situations where you want to avoid direct damage to your health.

when you hit your opponent somewhere where he has armor (of chain and above) you do stamina damage? or do you always just do stamina damage until a certain point no matter where you hit him?

gloves and gauntlets are in development, i hope? because those are kinda important.

With that said, I gotta say, their stretch goals are the most boring I've seen for any major Kickstarter project. Not one of them made me excited.
I think they are avoiding being bounded by promises and on a certain way I always were suspicious of give me 100.000 dollars more and we gonna make this... (How do you really calculate with such precision how much a complex feature in the game will cost?).

Motion Capture for 700k (achieved) is allright, especially with this kind of combat presentation. But I couldn't care less about the video or the tournament. I'd love to see more gameplay content instead (area size, side quests).

You... don't? It's a fucking incentive, not a budget plan. Ideally it should be things that a lot of people want but are relatively inexpensive to do, so you can hold them hostage.

I'm not big into books, but from what I have read the mocap technology has little or nothing to do with combat or its presentation, as it is a technology used for facial animations and as such will only be noticeable in dialogues and cutscenes. As for your other point, refer to evdk's earlier post – as the Kickstarter campaign is not really a major source of funding, it is doubtful major additions will be tied to the stretch goals.

For such highlighted desire for realism from them, the combat video has some details that are pretty jarring. For example, the way the most soldiers have their shields straps vertically aligned - I don't think kite shields ever made and held like this in reality? And the huge polearms some guys are holding 1-handed with a shield.
Or how he talks about leading a full scale charge with archers and artillery support - yeah, seems like a great idea to shoot with trebuchets into a castle while you have your own men storming it.

You begin the battle with trebuchets and your men move after enough damage is done. Not in the same time.

I know jack shit about medieval combat (or any other combat) but the gameplay footage does look promising.
The main thing I like is the fact that people actually react to a fucking blow to the head, which shouldn't be something exceptional for 2014...

Maybe you are right, but he really doesn't make it sound like that regardless of what he meant. And check out how when there are arrows and boulders flying high in the air when there's the scene of people climbing the ladders.

Love the general thrust of their approach to combat, definitely seems like something new and innovative. The concerns I have are about the hold defense button to auto-block/parry. I absolutely hated this in Bethesda games, and having to manually time your parries was some of the best parts of Gothic 1/2 and these other games. Obviously I can't really comment on it before trying the entire system, but not sure why they couldn't make the parrying/blocking manual.

Probably because they deemed manually directing parries too hard to master.

Enjoy the Revolution! Another revolution around the sun that is.

I liked the shitty animations in Morrowind. I liked the apparently crappy combat. I liked how npcs never slept, never changed routine and how they occasionally blocked doorways.

How disappointing that an indie group wants to improve on the shortcomings of an average open world game instead of taking inspiration from the few great ones.

Which ones, if you please. And what is so great behind them?
