First 90 review: http://www.gameblog.fr/tests/2059-wasteland-2-pc-mac

Meanwhile, on Joystiq: http://www.joystiq.com/2014/09/19/wasteland-2-review-the-toxic-adventure/

Several comments appended to this review suggest that it is based on "beta" code, or that the author did not play the game. Here are the facts: The review is based on a "pre-release" version of Wasteland 2, which we demarcated as such because it was distributed prior to the public launch of the game, not because it was considered so unfinished as to be unfit for review. Joystiq wouldn't have the game if its developers did not consider it ready to be shared, and we frequently review complete games prior to their retail or digital release (that's why you can learn about a game's quality on the day you want to buy it).

The reviewed code, approved by Brian Fargo, was enabled on the evening of September 9. "My only comments on this version to keep in mind is that we will be adjusting some of the combats for difficulty and to lessen ones that drag on longer than we think is right," Fargo said in an email. "One other small issue is that the SFX don't play when using a skill but expect an automatic update to address that in a few days. Also localization will be worked on until the last moments so best to evaluate it in English as there are localized lines missing and extra grammar and consistency passes that need to be completed.

"Lastly, this version will not have been code locked as long as the final so there could be some bug that popped up that won't be in the final. The final version is code locked for a week to ensure we catch the small things. But with all that said I think you will find a solid experience as we have all finished the game multiple times and in multiple ways."

As you can tell by the review above, the author encountered several major technical issues with the game as offered for review. There may be other critics out there who describe a smoother experience or who feel less disturbed by problematic elements. This review hinges on an honest description of what it was like for the author playing the game, written – to be frank – without regards to the developer's feelings. How that information helps in the breadth of your reading about Wasteland 2 is up to you.

The first NPC you get feels like cheating since she's super high level.
tongue.png

Agree, but that NPC is totally optional. Just don't get her to join and problem solved.

Yeah, normally such a character would have really shitty growths to make up for such high initial stats.

Though I completely missed her until after getting the rad suits.

Though I heard she permenantly leaves after a certain point.

I found an impossible safe there, WTF?
They're impossible if the safe level is higher than your safecracking skill by some margin.
Oh, it's strange there is such a hard safe so early in the game.
Gotta give something to the poor fools who spent all their points on Safecracking.
Correct. I'm delighted that I have to actually invest heavily in something to get the full payoff. WTFrolling through every single obstacle no matter how crap my party is does not sound appealing.

In a safe in Darwin I found a "Blacklist" with Ace and one of the other original games' rangers' names on it, crossed off. No un-crossed names were given. It seemed like an indicator of a massive plot, but I couldn't talk to anyone about it.

This game is fucking amazing. I have no idea what anyone's complaining about.

Well, I do know what they're complaining about, and it's really stupid. Someone let the toad kill one of their dudes in the tutorial mission and got mad. Someone tried to dig up a town's recently-departed leader, then got mad when nearby townsfolk who already don't trust the Rangers attacked. You have to do a lot of reading and keep a sharp eye out to know what's going on, and there are no quest markers, which is guaranteed to make some people mad. It's not Fallout® 3 with the Mothership Zeta™ DLC, and you can't bumble into combat and use an invulnerable slo-mo function to immediately win each battle, and I can definitely understand why people are mad about that.

I found a Top Hat clothing item recently. I really think it should be included in default character creation clothing, since there are at two portraits (including a backer-exclusive portrait) that incorporate top hats. It's nice to be able to match models with portraits, even if only approximately.

Only females have a yellow mining hat or gas masks, for example, but the portrait of a guy in thick raggy armor wearing a yellow mining hat and a gas mask is for males only. I feel like schizophrenic monkeys were in charge of organizing the character creation bits and pieces.

There are a lot of missing, mismatched, overlooked, and even duplicate bits and pieces in character creation in general.

The visual aspect of your characters throughout the game is one of the game's weaknesses. Its pretty rare to come across alternative that isn't dropping off some enemies clothing, my guys STILL look exactly the same as they did when i started because i didn't want to dress them up in silly outfits. I noticed that women can't wear tactical pants, or digital camo pants and have skateboarder helmets instead of the ones guys have.

I'm really hoping for a modders to step in, put in some visual progression and generally allow you to make your guys look like badasses.

Well ... I've only played through a few areas and I'm finding tons of cosmetic items. There are limits, and you can't make any character imaginable, but there are a great deal of options and plenty of room for "progression", even in the very early game. I've only been through a couple areas so I can't speak for the game as a whole, but if it keeps up like this I'll have hundreds of options before the end.

I agree that every piece should be mapped for male & female characters.

Got the game last nite, made my party in oh like 2 hours and played up to Highpool, went to dinner with significant other, played some more, went to bed 5 am, woke up early to play 45 minutes before work
Yeah you can say I like it ;)
And the combat although simplistic is fun and challenging at higher levels so looks awesome to me.

So, any character creation tips? Having too many hours of work per day + a baby doesn't give me the luxury to start over again and again to find a perfect team. Any min/max tips?

I see that AP > 8 and INT = 8 for 4 skills per level is a must, any other tips?

Thanks!
Stuff that seems to work well enough - Coord 6, Luck 1, Awa 4, Str 2, Spd 6, Int 8 and Chr 1. You'll want to change that around a little for your talker guy/leader I guess, upping charisma to say 2. Just try to keep AP at 10 and Combat Init at 11, although this one gives you combat init 12. Also might want to give one guy 10 int and one guy 8 Coord for sniping duties or something.

Useless skills: barter - maxed out it gives 10% better prices - what a joke. I also dropped alarm on a group I made now, because who gives a shit? Most of the alarm encounters occur with npc's you've already killed save for 1-2 locations. Might come into play much later but can be dropped at start. I also ignored mechanical repair - there's a quest in Highpool where you need it though, dunno if I can still get the female elected. And also ignored demolitions, since there are a decent amount of medkits and I haven't seen a trap that outright killed me yet and I plan to add Takayuki to take care of it for later minefields.

:retarded:You can drop attributes below 3? Maybe it was the unresponsive interface, but I tried to do this and I was convinced it was impossible. Son of a bitch.

You left-click existing bars, or, if you're decreasing skills below 1, left-click the number to the left of the bar in order to keep decreasing.

I just made it to Temple of Titan and, while the game has that open-world-easy-to-get-addicted-to, it's also a fucking slog. I like slower gaming experiences but this is just uneedingly slow. Skill usage is slow given how much there is of it, navigating an area like Valley of the Titans gets fucking boring because of how big the map is and how the map system works. Especially if you need to backtrack to check out another path, urgh. I really wish I could either A) bring up the map, click on an area, and have the map focus in on that area or B) just fucking fast travel (it has come to that). It just has no business being a map of that size if you ask me. It doesn't even look interesting at all visually.
There are also a crapload of bugs in this general region it seems judging from other posts on the intarwebz. Personally I had to reload when my monk dude froze on the spot after a combat encounter. I also kept crashing over and over in the Valley of Titans which was thankfully solved by turning the graphics options down.

I also kinda liked the combat at first in the game but now it's getting to be kiiiinda repetitive. I never played the first game but I guess they had a legacy of combat-heaviness to live up to?

The faction split in this area however (if I understand how it works correctly anyways) is pretty cool.

There are so many cool things about this game that I enjoy but at times I'm really struggling with it. It just feels like everything takes way too long (never thought I'd make that complaint about an RPG again). Content-wise, I don't think this is a game where you can say "oh it takes this and that amount of time to complete, it's HUGE" with a straight face. It's just that everything takes a really long fucking time. When I think of how little I've accomplished story/area-wise vs the hours I've put in, it kinda puts things in perspective.

I really wouldn't mind getting instant or near-instant skill usage at high levels. My computer chick is already at 9 and it takes forever. Mods, maybe? With my hypernerd all-int-10 crew I feel compelled to attempt every skill check.

My load times, both of savegames and of areas, are both pretty painful, too. My next machine may need to have an SSD.[/QUOTE]

Bros, are there any patches / news thereof already? I want to play it proper this weekend after I'm home, but I wonder if I should hold back just for a while.

I wouldn't play it seriously in this state.
It's pretty obvious it was "released" so they get the money from people who don't buy early access games and the press attention, not because it was actually done.
Too many annoying glitches and the talks about impending patches and new features being added aren't very encouraging to play it now.

It's not all that buggy, really. I have one mission that refuses to complete, but it's a sidething. I haven't experienced any crashes or obviously broken elements other than that.

"who didn't? I bet every player is curious enough to push it. And that glorious ending slide."

It's kinda like the whole 'siding with mutant in FO1'. Nobody takes it seriously as an ending. They'll choose it for shits and giggles then just reload their save. I 'm sure less than 1% (and I'm being generous) went 'welp, I finished the game time to make a new character' when picking it. Heh.

"Wasteland's combat is definetely tighter, but it lacks even the most basic options that even Fallout has. Anyway, I was just curious."

It also has options that FO doesn't. I don't FO has an 'ambush' option, IIRC.

"I hope they put in armor changing appearance in subsequent patches."

Yeah, I'm not at power armour yet but that was one of the reasons why it was so cool to get in FO. You saw the knights wearing it and youw ere like I WANT. Also, power armour is soemthing that should be quest/story based and not just random shop.

"As for "basic options", I was indeed talking about aimed shots. Just some basic options to choose from instead of just clicking attack, moving or using a consumable."

WL is basically gun based (with some melee) combat based. It is gonna be focused on shooting. Yeah, more types of called shots (it has head shots) could be added but it alreayd has options. Options that FO didn't have. But, outside of called shots, WL2 has enough to keep you busy.

"- Everything takes forever. Dozens upon dozens of skill checks that take like 6 seconds each to perform in each map. Every map also has a shitton of combat encounters that play out quite similarly per region. As a result you have these ridiculously bloated playtimes after covering very little ground."

Yeah, skill checks probably should be quicker or maybe base it on skill/toughness of check. This way you can't get away with it combat. And,e noguh with the 'repetive combat'. Every RPG ever created has it. The combat in WL2 is hella fun.

- "Some attributes are fucking useless while others are absolutely mandatory to do well."

No attribute is useless but some CAN be improved. And, sorry, intelligence should never be allowed to be dumbed down. DON'T BE RETARTET.

"Everybody hates him, but in the end, everybody wants what he's selling."

HELL FUCK NO.

I paid 250$ for PE and I have a funny feeling that the best thing I'll get out of it is WL2 which he had nothing to with. LMFAO

"Reduce the amount of shit jokes though."

HOLY FUCK.

"I don't like Fallout's system."

Which is why your combat tastes can't be taken seriously. FO combat was HELLA fun.

"Agree, but that NPC is totally optional. Just don't get her to join and problem solved."

BETTER IDEA: Take no npcs at all.

"Oh, it's strange there is such a hard safe so early in the game."

Open ended. It's also so those who focus on certain skills and have them higher are rewarded for it comapred to those who spread skills around.

Useless skills: barter - maxed out it gives 10% better prices - what a joke."

I believe barter uses all party skill combined. So, if you go to 4ish on each one you could have 28%. Still, i think they should have upped it to 2% or even 5% also increasing item costs too. That would make barter more important and useful.
