Am i the only one that is worried for actual meat of the game rather than combat itself. So far we didn't see almost any npc, city, village, etc. and living lands setting itself is bare from those things.

As for combat itself it feels like they were making POE3 from iso camera but sometime around the time they were bought by MS and MS ordered them to make it in first person camera. This would explain a lot about hit reactions, animations etc.

From what i have seen about game this seems like ARPG rather than RPG set in weird unpopulated land where you need to solve some mystery. Sometimes you will find NPC to do some small sidequest.

At least after the Avowed reveal Todd is probably thinking that this is his chance to make a game that's better than Obsidian's.

I can muddle through shit combat if I have to.. my biggest concern was how many times patel tried to squeeze "Choice and Consequences" into every sentence while showing the most shittiest quest I've ever seen in a little desert corridor surrounded in obvious invisible wall boundaries with backdrops you'll never be able to visit.

This thing is gonna be a train wreck.

The vast majority of RPG combat designers cannot even make a good swordplay system

What's even the closest someone has gotten to a good first person swordplay system?

Dark Messiah? Mount and Blade? Kingdom Come: Deliverance? Chivalry 2? Mordhau?

Swordplay outside VR will probably always be bad.
The Fall of Avalon has some really nice first-person melee combat. It's held back a bit by somewhat janky animations (the hitbox and range sometimes feel detached from the animations, but tbh it was the same in Dark Messiah), but overall it's really fluid and requires you to be quick on reflexes. Another cool thing is if you start moving away from enemies, they will often use throwable knives/axes on you, so you need to dodge a lot and manage your stamina well. Progression is kinda busted at the moment though (game is still in EA), so eventually you get so OP you can just one-shot everything, so everything becomes moot, but the first couple of hours feel really amazing to play. One of the devs is supposedly into HEMA, so it's thanks to that:

I wouldn't hold my breath for anything special. I just shiver at the thought of what kind of story Obsidian will tell us in their "rich, weird and wonderful world".

Fucking hell, when did Obsidian's job become pushing out "rich, weird and wonderful" versions of Fallout and Skyrim.

A lot of normies are already up in arms on plebbit, saying the game looks bad, bland, etc. Every time the topic of Bethesda comes up, Obsidian mentions naturally follow (as the much better RPG developer), so I can't wait for this game to come out and make them finally realize that the latter is only marginally better, and that New Vegas was over a decade ago, written mostly by people who don't work there anymore. They excused TOW by it being an AA game (even though it was priced like AAA), but there will be no excuses now, not with MS money behind them.

This game was pitched to MS during the acquisition talks as a "Skyrim w/ co-op" deal that got scaled down into being Fantasy Outer Worlds since they were taking too long. There's never been any internal interest in doing Pillars 3 until Baldur's Gate 3's success.

I know that. It just feels weird like that.

You can freeze and then shatter an enemy!

Never seen that before! INNOVATION boyos.
Hexen did that 30 years ago
Name an action RPG released in the last 10 years where you can do that.
According to the Codex, Dragon's Dogma is a 2016 release, and it does feature magical ice spells that can freeze enemies, leaving them susceptible to being shattered when killed. I expect the upcoming sequel will include an equivalent debilitation. :M

Wonder between this and Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon, which one will end up being the better Elder Scroll-like RPG? Despite Obsidian having bigger budget (Microsoft buck) than the devs of Tainted Grail, I have the feeling it will be the latter, especially after the borefest that is The Outer World.
Avowed will end up being the better Elder Scrolls-like RPG, because its writing and gameplay will be worse, and therefore more in line with the TES series. :smug:

Realistic swordplay in a game would require a lot of HEMA-type considerations.
Time for my weekly reminder that "realistic" and "good gameplay" are not necessarily the same thing, even in a first-person title. It's a reasonable assumption but not a necessary one. Sadly I doubt Obsidian is trying to think outside of the box either and probably also think it's the same thing; and I'm also skeptical they can pull it off.

I'm watching it more closely now. I believe the environments are very much WiP, because of how uneven the detailization is. You can see shots without gameplay, just moving camera, where the viewing angle is wide and there is rich detail on walls, ground, patches of vegetation. This was clearly staged for trailer footage. Then there are the cuts of gameplay footage, with the xaurip camp most notably where you can see bare ground in one end of the camera view and props cluttered in the other end. Also the FOV in those combat bits seems like 80. Thanks Xbox.

Besides mixing footage from trailer and gameplay, they've even been repeating bits of the same gameplay footage within the course of the "deep dive". For me this indicates they have only a couple of environments functioning where they are currently testing combat mechanics and animations. Work on the so-called "vertical slice" is likely not even complete yet. How they will go from this to release within the course of 2024, I find it hard to imagine. If it gets released this year, you can forget about QA on various combat styles and balance. If we get a decent editing pass on the text it will be a nice surprise.

MS money behind them.
I see this shit thrown around a lot.
Excuse me but what MS money? You think MS showers Obsidian with money? They're probably facing bankruptcy by this point. MS doesn't give a fuck even if they paid 7.5$B. That company is ran by pajeets.
Why would Feargus agree to being bought out if it didn't involve money? Why would they settle into a position that forces them to release every game on a service that's a few dollars a month day one if they aren't getting anything from it? You don't make any sense.
