Monks are cringe. The only way to sufficiently dilute the class is to pair them with other classes like how in Kingmaker, you take them for increased AC. Your fists aren't lethal weapons, you're just delusional.
I think Larian have buffed the class somewhat compared to 5e RAW. We'll have to see how the class stacks up in BG3.
According to those who have played the full version, the class is supposedly fun to play.

I suppose for a martial class the fact that it isn’t even remotely inspired by a historical anologue makes them seem more like a bad Halloween costume than the others.

I’m not an expert on the path that led to their inclusion in D&D, but I suspect it was on the back of the sudden 1980’s US pop culture interest in the Orient, which is a stupid, shallow reason to include them. European monks would be much better, with monk as a cleric subclass or something.

I get what you mean, but it makes me think of the people who see something bad in fantasy (like general misery) and are like "things were pretty rough back then". Back when? It's fantasy. By definition, it's meant to not be real, or even realistic. "Low fantasy" is cringe.

It's stupid as shit that we let society degrade to a point where we can't have hot women in media anymore because people get offended.

Also monks aren't cringe. It's WotC's fault for undercooking the class.

Monks first appeared in a 1975 supplement, so the infection began quite early. Not really sure when they could be considered as becoming a "staple" D&D class though.

I'm old so my memory fails me but as far as I remember the complaints were more about RTWP vs TB, is BG2 good or bad, Morrigan sex, does the game actually have C&C or is it just an illusion, art style quality or lack thereof, and then discussions about the merits and qualities of 2009/2010 Bioware.
Nothing compares to the shitshow that is the BG3 thread.
My theory is that the BG3-haters are closeted bearfuckers who secretly fear that they will not be able to suppress their unnatural urges if given the opportunity to act on them.

That leads to them to lashing out against the game, like all those closeted homos in the Republican party and the evangelical churches lash out against faggotry.
That is funny coming from

I just wish Larian games were top-tier cringe so they are funny to watch, instead of mid-level cringe that just makes you feel dirty for even being exposed to it.
I agree, they need to reach the level of Monty Phyton to become good

With all due respect ArchAngel (cus we bros in our D4 hate) but I do recall you defending WotR to death despite the game showcasing a myriad of tranny/homo shit in their companion lineup. Not trying for a whataboutism as BG3 clearly isn't better, but I'm asking for consistency here.

Sure, as long as they brew mead or belong to the Ordo Fratrum Hospitalis Sancti Ioannis Hierosolymitani.

The DnD ones are the human equivalent of a katana - inferior to a longsword (and the holy warrior that wields it) in just about every way that matters.

There is a big line between homo/tranny shit and zoophilia/pedophilia. I never said I was happy with all that shit in Pathfinder games, but there you could easily ignore all that shit (and kill offending characters as well).
BG3 crossed a line. Also I am shitting on it because of Karlach stuff as well and I suspect game will be full of such shit.

I keep seeing this cope over and over again. Freedom to kill anyone didn't make a woke shitstain like The Outer Worlds any better or more enjoyable and you're not owning anyone by consuming this goyslop.

It's always been thinner than you think and accepting the first lot was just one step towards accepting the later.

Err... what? You state you forgive WoTR because you can ignore all of it but this game crosses the line because of an optional choice? That's some peak doublethink you got going there.

5e DnD monks are based after eastern fighting monks with a heavy dose of mysticism. The spiritual component is what separates them from the rest of the martial classes, to the point where they are more akin to mages that cast fist more than a pure martial artist.

Like look at this list of what the different traditions can do:

  • Fart out sun-powered fireballs (Sun Soul)
  • Teleport between shadows and go invisible (Shadow)
  • Explode someones heart Kill Bill style (Long death)
  • Larp as a dragon complete with Dragon Breath (Ascendant dragon)
  • Larp as a JoJo stand (Astral Self)
  • Larp as the last avatar (Four Elements)

With this in mind, I don't see why someone with magic fists can't compete with someone who has a sword.

A big sign of the faggification of d&d(and this game) is that seemingly every recruitable npc in this is "hawt" and "romanceable"- with the exception of maybe Minsc.

Probably the biggest reason why there isn't a single recruitable Gnome, Dwarf or Halfling btw. Those are races unused by this trope.

Moving onto more interesting stuff, this is one of the topics where the cultural war bullshit has made it so that you can't make everybody happy:

- Make hot females: you get people bitching about objectification and what-not, as well as a few criticizing it for cheapening the experience - don't be surprised if people end up bitching about having a tits slider (?) in this.
- Make them rugged: you get people bitching about how SJWs have destroyed beauty in videogames - again, if they had introduced a romanceable dwarf instead of Minthara or Karlach more people would bitch about not having enough hawt human romance options in a fantasy game... unless it was a big titty dwarf, maybe :smug:

We went through this some time ago when Larian decided to remove the bikini armor from D:OS.

And a similar thing happens with romances and party member interactions, with some people getting triggered about NPCs acting all uppity and others ranting about Larian including an insta-friendz button for Shadowheart. A really dumb "give me my power-fantasy" vs. "stop pandering to the player" situation, which could be solved with more comprehensive difficulty settings.

Well they could still make the shitty "romanceable" (barf) characters that the teenage fatties soak their gamer chairs over. But then they could also make a couple of good ones who are just cool, no-nonsense adventurer guys that want to slay monsters and solve problems for cultured gamers like myself.

The only actual, purpose made, real-world oriental fighting monk is the Sohei, the Japanese warrior monk (with a few, much more limited, close relatives like Koreans). Imagine the awkward silence of D&D players if their monks were anything like this:

So instead we get the Shaolin stupidity like Jackie Chan without the charm crossed with Dragon Ball Z. Bruce Lee movies were red hot the year they were introduced to D&D, I bet.

Hush, I'm bating the weebs.

Anyway, I'm not a fan of monks. On a conceptual level, they're the developer approved equivalent of Fighter Illusionist, the poster child of everything that's wrong with multiclassing in a system built on the premise of distinct class identities - a martial class with a semi spellcasting component in service of the martial component. Mechanically they may suck, but their existence partially legitimized all the Frankenstein's munchkins out there.

Also, they aren't paladins.

And yes, I played Fighter Illusionist, and yes, I dipped Vivisectionist. On a monk. My hands are not clean.

You can just go Kensei path if you want to do that.

The main class is kungfu magic monk, which was a pretty established trope even decades ago.

Anyway, I'm not a fan of monks.

I'm not either, but because it's a noob-trap class. There's only two types of people that play monk: noobs who think it's cool and will inevitably have to swap characters later on, or people who know how to play monk and turn it into a ludicrous, untouchable anime protagonist who has flying and 120ft movement somehow.
