It is so vague some people are no doubt gonna get the wrong idea (he pays them in exchange for the statement!)

The giveaway was the part about them paying his legal expenses. The money in any settlement is going to be going all one way so if they are paying his expenses, they are paying the rest of the settlement as well.

I suppose once the suit was filed in the proper location, it emerged immediately that they had nothing to support their claims, while Avellone could pinpoint each and every job that he lost in direct connection to said claims.

It's very onesided as settlements go, in fact it almost sounds like a ruling, so this would be my explanation.
