Got to Sand map. Giving up on this as I'm tired of the Hunt The Wumpus gameplay (finding mistles), esp after the clusterfuck that was The Cathedral.

Next up from Gamefly is BT4 or Death Stranding. I did have the PS4 BGs 1 & 2, but decided against it and removed them from my queue.

For people who played without any help - how did you manage to survive the Lost Invasion in the Cathedral? It took me 5 tries to went through this, 3 of which were with companion in place. I imagine doing this alone would be extremely painful

Use the spin to win two hander move with a zwei and look for opportunities where enemies somewhat calm their tits for just a wee bit then enter the fray and press spin to win, deals massive damage and staggers. Once it's on cooldown try to hit people if they're staggered or backstab the fatty spawn, or run away if you don't have much room to breath till you can use the move again, rince and repeat until the wave stops.

edit:

Googled for the skill name (I can barely remember any name in this game) :

Finished game. Started a NG+, but got to that fucking water level that's basically a maze with keys you have to find and water that slows you down, realized I hate this game, and decided to uninstall. It's a mediocre game that has enough interesting for 1 playthrough, but I don't relish the prospect of NG+.

Still, even the fact that you considered NG+ makes it better than most games out there. I guess.

Game is 40% off on PS Store now.

https://store.playstation.com/en-us/product/UP0700-CUSA10410_00-CODEVEIN00000000

I reached level 100, getting close to the end (Crypt Spire). Still like the game and think it's worth playing. Having said that, there are some issues:
- running with a big 2 handed weapon (Zweihander or Juggernaut Hammer) is so satisfying, it's VERY hard to convince yourself to try something else. Tells something good about how they implemented heavy weapons, but probably something bad about how the rest compares
- games was clearly balanced for co-op play. Playing solo is at times too difficult IMO, while playing with a coop partner makes stuff too easy. It would be really cool to have something in between
- aggro rate for enemies is surprisingly low sometimes
- second phases of some of the boss fights seem cheap
- some weapon infusions seem very weak, probably should be balanced more

On the good side:
+ enemy variety much better than expected
+ level design is actually good in some areas (but sucks balls totally in few)
+ characters / NPC actually have some personality and don't look fake, including voice acting
+ story is OK. Doesn't scream 'stupid' and you don't have any SJW bullshit
+ very good gameplay (you have this 'let's kill few more guys and go to sleep' feeling)
+ not a single bug encountered

Overall 8/10 for me.

Nice summary. My advice: try Black Greatsword. Has both better moveset (rather similar to Oni Bane) and causes Impact Shockwaves from Atlas Gift.

Yes, worth it. Single playthrough should take around 35h, big enough variety to consider another playthrough with a different build.

Missed it :/ I see it's a drop in Ashen Cavern. Will go there and try it, thanks.

Decent video about the game (random tips):

Things I didn't know:
- you can include drain attack as a part of the combo
- mastering gifts is much slower if you fight lower level enemies
- you can double-infuse your weapon (fire + lightning at the same time)

Just finished it. Took me like 32h. I liked it, a lot actually. But it made me realize how much I suck at these action games. The Cathedral wave, that bitch and fatass bosses, Mido, died like 20 times at those.
I played with a Silver Spellblade build, and Yakumo ofc, dude can carry you like 90% of the game. Good game, solid 7.5/10, looking forward to some story DLC (story and characters were way better than I expected)

I am almost through Catherdral area. It's a fun time and plays pretty buttery. Level design is pretty boring though, and most enemies thus far go down in the midst of their wake up animations. Story is alright but I am beginning to skip the memory scenes, I think they're done very badly.

Great character models. I can't remember the last game that let me make an attractive female character. It's a lost art.

Got to snowy mountain, beat first boss there. I dont know, this level design is really annoying. And when the entire story so far is an attempt to pull at heart strings that you just don't feel, it's not satisfying.

But I will still commend this game for being nice to look at and smooth to play.

How are the following components of this game?
Itemization
Combat
Dungeons
There's a few different types of weapons that determine the skills you can use. Boss weapons come with unique abilities and you can upgrade any weapon to +10 and also give them elemental properties/reduce weight and so on, I only personally ever found use for the weight reduction. The only piece of armor you use are the blood veils which affect stats, weight and most importantly what type of parry you do. Overall there's a good amount of build variety thanks to these factors, on top of the codes (classes).

Combat is like 50% Souls, but flashier/more arcadey. There's the usual lock-on tango but you actually have lots of abilities to use at your disposal like combos, buffs and so on. So if your mindset is "I'd like something pretty close to Souls but unique" then this fits the bill and it's why I liked it. Partners are really useful and choosing the correct one for the boss makes a big difference - not having a partner is like the hard mode for the game, but the game is still very challenging even with one. The end game bosses in particular as well as the early ones.

It mostly takes place in fairly open areas like ruined city districts and the like but there's some caves in there as well and an Anor Londo clone. Overall the design there was decent, some people really seemed to get stuck at Anor Londo but I didn't find it nearly that bad.

Itemization: Generally weapon types similar to Souls. No bows, but muskets exist (and use mana to fire). Much less armor choice. No shields (but there are two-handers with perfect block stats). Class passives instead of accessories.
The graphics and animations are cool, over the top, anime style (see Judgements Edge animations). Good choice of two-handers :p Decent selection overall.

Combat: a little more arcade then Souls. Also strong abilities exist, that change the game balance more. Plus permanent companions are easy mode - but some places/bosses can be very tough without one.

Dungeons: a bit of a mixed bag. IMO the level design gets progressively better - the better design starts after the Cathedral level. I liked some of the late game levels a lot.

I just finished the game but have no memory of facing Juzo Mido. Was that optional?

Game has its problems but it's got those aesthetics
