But I think you could argue this is the nature of the beast when it comes to this game type.

The fundamental biggest issue with PoE is that experimentation and creativity are hugely punished - and that's usually the most rewarding part of the game.
New players see that large board and all those ability gems and think "wow.. I'm gonna try to create something uniqu- NO. Follow the excel sheet or you'll fail.

Never have I seen a newb trap so punishing. The chasm between the 20 'meta builds' and the 200 billion 'that's not gonna fucking work' builds is huge.
This game punishes the most enjoyable thing about an RPG - very severely. (You can lose 100's of hours on a bad mistake)
Fun fact: This applies to Underrail too.
Only partly because it is way less complex so it is harder to fuck up. In underrail I made my own build from start and made to end of the game. Only thing I knew before I started Underrail is that I should not spread too much and try to focus my character.
With PoE I made like 30 builds before I hit one that was able to do end game at that point. Later I would follow some builds and instantly be able to do endgame.
Even with that, some build guides still let you just have barely functional end game character instead of something fun (mostly because I picked builds to follow by what sounded fun instead what is top 10% of meta builds).

It went from his passion to a dayjob. He's talked about it before; when he got a girlfriend and then a wife, well. More important things in life. I don't blame him. I do find it weird for anyone to still enjoy that content after this long though.
The problem with Kripp is that he's woke now, and I bet this is because of his girlfriend (who has the charisma of a frozen onion by the way)
He has Trump derangement syndrome and one of his last feats was to lament how Musk ruined Twitter and the servers will shut any day now.

Well, at least he can still make competent critiques

His peek was killing Diablo on hardcore pre-nerf.
That was when he was his most passionate.

Now he sits in his chair dead eyed, playing hearthstone 24/7 with zero emotion.. counting down the minutes to death. Wokism is soul destroying.

Pretty sure PoE tree starts zoomed in. Take a hint.
I think they changed that, but I'm not sure. It definitely did start zoomed out at one point though, yeah, and it was a long ass point, too, you could say it was a line and not a point, in fact.

Is hating Musk woke or unwoke?

I had more written out.. about how the PoE experience is 30% sitting around AFK waiting to trade up / down to get that exact set of items you need for said build.
So much this, if you want to try out any of the remotely interesting builds. I have no idea how people playing SSF don't die of boredom.

Still, for all the shit I might give to PoE, I do end up enjoying the process of following the meta build, watching the numbers grow and the mobs melt, and finally being able to clear big-name bosses. It's satisfying in the end, somehow.

He always looked like that. The consistency of his tired "I slept two hours last night" look over the years is extraordinary.

This is kinda true but he used to get excited when playing MMO's / Diablo.. Or at least the clips I've watched.
I'll admit I'm not part of #KrippNation - so maybe 80% of the time he was the same dead-eyed person but I was only seeing the highlights.

I think the format of the Diablo franchise has broken down. It's more of an action adventure now with its heavy plot. D1 was criticized for the near absence of one, but it worked for what the game was. An atmospheric killing field. It was all very random with the exception of the town and a few quests. Particularly concerning the randomness of spells, which was half of every character--not capping out character level in your first run and having Nightmare & Hell modes made sense. With explicit skill trees, fixed quests, and heavy plot--the casino style advancement doesn't fit anymore. The two halves are fighting eachother. D2 might have been a compromise between how it started and where it is, but I typically lost interest with a character in nightmare mode. The diminishing gains of grind for skill points and better loot become very prominent by the time you hit L60. Battlenet and Hardcore mode were the only things that kept me interested.

My opinion is probably in the minority, but aRPGs have developed into something I don't like. Now it's all about mathematically superior builds and shit you need specialized calculators for. Every time you smack an enemy with a sword you get a dozen numbers, conditions, and entire algorithms spat out on screen in five different colors and fonts.

:prosper:

WTF. That's disgusting.

I miss atmospheric dungeon crawling. Interesting stories that came with 10 pages of lore in the manual. Minimal loot, minimal build structure. You actually walk around like a normal person instead of being an autocast bot destroyer of worlds.

God I'm fucking old, and I'm even that old.

This is probably why I like Diablo 1 more than 2. Nothing in the arpg sphere was made for me after 2.

Bros, I used to get excited about shit a decade or so ago too.

I have this existential crisis all the time.. Is everything shit.. or am I just getting old and don't care anymore?
I remember being so hyped for new RPG's coming out..

Not sure if it was PoE or Cyberpunk.. but at some point.. I think I just died on the inside.

I actually agree with this.. Diablo 2 was memorable for me because of the story, artwork and the interesting builds you could try.
I never once thought "man I love how balanced and in-depth D2's itemization is.. I hope more games are even more of this!"

I would be more impressed with a game trying something new for once..

All these ARPG's are blending together.. their stories and mechanics and graphics.. it's all so tiresome. It's just a pissing contest of which one has more """"Depth"""" and the least offensive micro-transactions.

Bought Wolcen for like $2-3, which is suppose to be a shit tier ARPG and was pleasantly surprised.

After that watched some D4 gameplay from the beta and still can't believe people will be buying it for $70-100. Feels and looks like an indie game from Steam.

The 1-2 punch of Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age 2. Fucking Bioware, man.

This is probably why I like Diablo 1 more than 2.

Diablo 1 is a better game by far, even aesthetics and atmosphere alone.

Others mentioned Harbinger and NOX , I might add Torchlight 1, Dungeon Siege 1 (maybe 2 too), Sacred, hell even Divine Divinity.

There's something about games that try to do what Diablo 1/2 does that just never measure up unfortunately. I've played a lot of aRPGs, especially the indie ones like Grim Dawn, which are good, but never quite reach the same level.

IMO, Diablo 1 and 2 are the best at what they do, respectively.

I think that's why Blizzard still has such fan loyalty, literal decades after their decline in quality. Because nobody else really took the crown from them. And a lot of people are hopeful that they, or anyone else for that matter, can succeed in making something that excites our cold, cynical hearts.

A cure to this self-delusion is to occasionally have a game come out that you really enjoy. That proves it isn't you, but the state of the industry simply being so parlous. If you NEVER like anything anymore, though, yeah... maybe you really are just over games. Personally I have had that experience once I got jaded, but it has been a few years now. I think the last time I had that feeling was DOS 1 (hated DOS 2), and more powerfully with Might and Magic X which was a huge surprise and an amazing feeling playing through it for the first time.

most people dont give a shit about poes complexity, its one of the things that ppl DONT want.

Presentation is what matters. D4 got that in spades.

Does combat feel good?
Are the graphics good?
Are the SOUND design good?
Is the artstyle good?
Is the UI Good?
Is the game responsive?
Do the skills feel great and cool?
is the story good?
is the endgame fulfilling?

D4 checks alot of those boxes. PoE does not.

PoE is a spreadsheet simulator for aspergers autists/ADHD people, with graphics tacked on for a GUI lol.
Sure its got complexity, everything else sucks big fat dick up the ass

You can't tell whats what half the time with so much pixel dogshit on the screen and the ADHD speed pacing of the game, let alone the overly complex "builds" and grindy itemization.

I tried POE, felt like I was doing accountant job office, uninstalled.

Then I looked at all videos with people speedrunning instakilling mobs with colorful fireworks all around and asked myself why I did install it in the first place.

But Ehy, POE is the best ever, gimme upvotes for my validation cause I am insecure.
