What cracks me up are some of the omnipresent posters here who habitually bitch and moan about how terrible Fallout 4 and Bethesda games are yet it's obvious they've played all the way through every Bethesda game + all DLC :P The sperg is strong with these people.

Only played FO4 once and stopped before the NukaWorld DLC out of boredom but I should give it another go though... heavily modded. Preferably something that nixes the main quest and allows a fun sandbox experience. Exactly what are these "dynamic encounters" in the Horizon mod?

Holy shit that's a man who can endure.

I genuinely don't know how anyone can take more than 10-20 hours of FO4's tripe. It's just SO bland and dull it's unreal. It's like listening to lift music, not particularly bad, just soul drainingly numb.

Once there was a time I rarely ever finished RPGs. I only had full playthroughs of early Fallouts and Witchers under my belt.

Then I decided to man up and started actually completing them. The good ones, like Infinity Engine games and Troika masterpieces, the bad ones, like some of the peculiarities I reviewed for Really Obscure RPGs thread. The original ones and the bland ones. I guess I got fed up with quitting.

That's a man who eats his potatoes. :salute:

Yeah yeah, fps mechanics are "boring", waiting for turns to click a sprite to attack every 30 seconds or selecting a select box around 6 characters hand having them autoattack with the occasional spell is "intense and interesting". Get out of here.

Don't tell me you like FO4 too as well as the wank that is Skyrim?

Skyrim is a bollocks RPG, but at least there is some fun in there as a throwaway popamole piece of wank. It's bad, but a few memorable quests like the Fighters Guild & the hangover one were OK. But FO4 was absolute choco-jammo-rammed full of bland, boring, forgettable shit.

Exactly what are these "dynamic encounters" in the Horizon mod?

The mod kept tracking my karma level for some reason so I'm guessing they generate random encounters based on karma?

I hit level 15 last night and the game told me I can unlock specialization. That is if I had taken the right perks.
After some reading, I realized the 'specialization' is so focused on offense. Some samples are melee specialist, ranger sniper, commandos, ninjas, lasers, cowboy (revolver, lever-shotgun etc)
I didn't pick any of that +10 weapon crit rating etc, everything is just Hitpoints for me.

Kinda disappointed TBH. I need 3 ranks on offensive perks that is not really needed atm. Kill speed is fast if you aim for the head. The exception to this are robots like Assaultron etc. They're my achilles heel atm.
While every single point of HP means enduring many hits before needing to spend a bandage.

The problem with Skyrim isn't that it's a shit RPG. I mean it's not even an RPG to begin with. The problem is it's not even kind of good at just being an action game, which it's desperately trying to be. It wants to be this open world FPS with I guess a vague semblance of being a hack and slash...but it isn't even good or interesting as that because the combat is so fucking terrible. You just mindlessly swing at enemies without any thought to anything. Its like one of the most boring shit action games that's ever been made.

This would also seem to be the same problem Fallout 4 has from what I've seen of it.

It is not "lazy design" you sperg. It is supposed to be comic relief.

He didn't do or say anything funny, though. Actually, that was a gigantic missed opportunity. You could, for instance, keep him around when you pick up the Cryo gun and he says something like "Fuck you, dude". That's not even that great, but it's something.

After hearing it mentioned several times, I looked up the "Kid in a Fridge" quest on Youtube yesterday. If you haven't seen or played it, I recommend watching since the quest is absolutely bonkers:

There is actually a solid framework here. You find a kid, and you can choose to get him to his parents or sell him to some raider. If you give him to his parents, you can choose to fight the raider or convince him to leave.

It's just that the execution is hilariously bad. The quest takes itself seriously even though the events transpiring are completely insane and comical. It looks like it's supposed to be a joke, but it just isn't. You expect a punchline, but when it ends you realize that "Wait, this wasn't a joke?".

I've seen it mentioned that Bethesda's Fallout games would make more sense if they took place just after the apocalypse, and this quest is a great example of this. The kid acts like he was in the fridge for days at most, not two centuries. The parents acts like they've been separated from their kid for a week, not two hundred years. Then there's the insanity of the kid surviving on the fridge's content, no passerby ever hearing him, and the parents still staying at their house.

Try watching from 4:44 with a straight face. The triumphant emotional music, the parents' limited reactions to seeing their son for the first time in 200 years, the goofy contrast of the mother's spotless white dress against the eternally dirty surroundings... When she lets out a hammy "Oh my gooood!" I burst into laughter.

Apparently the quest attempts to excuse part of its madness by having the raider explain that ghouls do not need to eat, but other parts of Fallout 4 contradict this by showing that ghouls do need to eat. So the quest's writer wasn't even consistent with the rest of the game.

How did Todd Howard approve this quest?

Why this game is on RPG subforum? FL4 has less RPG on it than any survival game.

And has the most RETARDED progression ever. Seriously. On new vegas, you start with a 556 clearly improvised bolt action rifle in poor condition(
Varmint rifle). Then get a semi auto rifle on 556(service rifle) and finally a light machine gun and the marksman carbine. Even using the same ammo, there are a huge progression.

Yeah yeah, fps mechanics are "boring", waiting for turns to click a sprite to attack every 30 seconds or selecting a select box around 6 characters hand having them autoattack with the occasional spell is "intense and interesting". Get out of here.

FPS mechanics aren't boring. But FL4 is trash even as a FPS. Pick Battlefield 1 for eg, the firerate and damage per round is important, but stability, accuracy, damage droppoff, bullet drag(...) are also important. People debate till this day if Springfield M1903 or Gewehr 98 is the best long range rifle, because Gw98 has better muzzle speed(880 m/s) but M1903 has lower bullet drag and maintain high speed at longer range. On Assault weapons, people debate a lot between the very stable and accurate Ribeyrolles 1918 to the crazy fast firing SMG's and the
SMG 08/18 is very popular. On FL4, there are no decision between "should i use the weapon A or weapon b", you only look to the DPS and pick wathever has the highest DPS.

PS : On BF1 you can also use K-bullets to engage armored vehicles and can use incendiary ammo in a specific LMG. Can also use slugs on shotguns. A feature that was present on FLNV and Bugthesda removed by no reason.

And note that i an criticizing FL4 as a FPS because as a RPG, it has less RPG on it than any survival game that i've played. And Dialog wheels are the trashiest thing ever. As for the gameplay on more tactical RPG's, you are completely wrong. If you play on story mode and don't need to carry about a lot of things, is not my problem.

The problem is it's not even kind of good at just being an action game, which it's desperately trying to be. It wants to be this open world FPS with I guess vague semblance of being a hack and slash...but it isn't even good or interesting as that because the combat is so fucking terrible. Yep. The melee combat on skyrim is TRASH. But lets be real; archery is not bad.

seems like bethesda have went into a different direction - instead of replacing a low-tier weapon with something better you can now use the same upgradeable gun for the duration of the whole campaign. Kinda like in Dark Souls, where your starting broadsword can carry you through the whole game and can be used to kill the final boss without problems.

This system even creates a certain build complexity.
In Fo3 in order to create an energy weapons expert you just need to invest all of your skillpoints into energy skill, and that's it - SPECIAL was rubbish, weapons had no stat/skill requirements, and i don't even remember any specific perks. In Fo4 on the other hand you need to think of SPECIAL requirements since there are different perks for different types of weapons (pistol-sized, automatics, scoped, etc), for different upgrades (gun nut / science) and specifically for energy weapons (nuclear physicist).

why would you compare a multiplayer shooter (where extra 1% of damage or extra 1 meter of range is a big deal) with a single player action-rpg? There is no need to implement all of these stats into the game because it won't matter in a fight against AI.

PS : On BF1 you can also use K-bullets to engage armored vehicles and can use incendiary ammo in a specific LMG. Can also use slugs on shotguns. A feature that was present on FLNV and Bugthesda removed by no reason.
removing alternative ammo types was a mistake on bethesda's part, i agree.

The whole world loves Fallout 4. RPGCodex is just a place for butthurt spergs, with withdrawl effects from Skyrim and Fallout 4, who are sad there is no Fallout 5 or Elder Scrolls 6 to bitch about. It 's ok you shitlords, our favourite Todd is on it.

Yep. But a post apocalyptic gun focused game and a fantasy focused game are two different things. And upgrating a lot a sword and infusing with magic when for eg is very different than giving a minigun and power armor to a noob. Moonlight greatsword requires that you defeat a boss in a specific way on DS1 and that you trade a boss soul with a hidden NPC(DS2).

why would you compare a multiplayer shooter (where extra 1% of damage or extra 1 meter of range is a big deal) with a single player action-rpg? There is no need to implement all of these stats into the game because it won't matter in a fight against AI.

Would make fighting the AI far more interesting. Just look to Draong's Dogma.

If the enemy is a armored cyclops and you have a longbow. Hitting him in the armor can means that your arrow is bounced and you dealt ZERO damage. Removing the armor and hitting in the eye is not only 100% damage but also a hit in a weakstpot. Most enemies like saurians has weakspots where you can cut his tail and it is so amazing.

There are also damage drop-off and armor absorbs by a flat amount. So, there are enemies which my longbow can pierce and damage at 30m but not at 200m. It gives a lot of variety to the combat and makes even grinding fell more interesting.

------------------------

When i mean that FL4 is a awful FPS, hell, even Skyrim is a better FPS than FL4. I mean, what Skyrim has that FL4 lacks >
  • Ballistics
  • Long range is not suboptimal
  • Bows has different "weapon speed"
  • Leveling up archery and investing into perks affects how efficient as a archer you are and gives unique things.
  • Can use poison and "special" arrows and bolts, including explosive bolts on crossbows
  • (...)
Still has some BUGThesda dumb ideas. Like the armor absorbing by percentage. So the strongest siege ballista made by a ancient Drawf, buffed by all types of ancient magic buffs can throw a house sized "arrow" at 1000 m/s and the steel armor will be just as effective on absorbing damage as a low poundage children's toy bow. But is better than FL4.

There are variations on exploding bolts on Skyrim, while there are just no HE shells/rounds on FL4...

Sadly, both of those are still a major part of my list. The best I could do is make them 'better' than before. F4EE uses Horizon as a main pillar to rebalance the game, so settlements are not actually useless anymore, and my own custom tweaks to crafting allow for more interesting reasons to collect resources, like in Skyrim.

Dumb question perhaps but could it perhaps be replaced with that when the player gets here he/she already finds somewhat established settings but that they require resources/trade alliances/more citizens.
So instead the player goes out making treaties with trading companies, clearing out places that the settlers can use to grow stuff or do salvaging, and convince NPCs to settle at these places?

An elephant in the room, should I mention that fucking Bethpizda literally took a gag from South Park, when Cartman locks Butters in the fridge, and turned it into a quest? If you look at the definition of hack in some dictionary, you will see a picture of Shittesda developers right there.

You don't even have to invest in Energy Guns skill, it affects literally only your hit chance in VATS. If you don't use VATS, you can use energy weapons with 0 Energy skill without any problems.

This is actually done in a mod already, Sim Settlements Conqueror. But, because of how script-heavy that mod is, it is not viable in a heavily modded setup. However, if that is all you desire from Fallout 4, give it a try! It is a great mod.

Skill also effect your aim outside of VATS, until the skill reach 70 or above, your hand will keep shaking heavily like a drug addicts out of his medicine, which make you miss lots of your shots.

VATS wasn't really needed on PC with FO3 or New Vegas, and it's definitely not needed in FO4 since they actually did improve the combat at least. I can't imagine why you'd use it voluntarily.

Don't recall any of that. One of the first energy weapons available for player is laser pistol in the raider's supermarket, and I remember trying it out with <20 energy skill without any shaking.

If you happened to play fo3 with TTW, your game will have the skill requirement system is in place, and since the requirement for laser pistol is 0, the shaking won't happen no matter your skill.
If it's not because of the TTW, well, you just remember it wrong.

Dafuq you talking about mods? I played this piece of shit mostly in 2008, before even Broken Dick and other dlcs were released. Couple of years later replayed it with dlcs, and I don't remember any of the mentioned shaking. Hell, game doesn't even have ironsights, what's the point?
