So not part 2 of Underworld? That dude can cook steak in no time flat but would it pass the test of Hell's Kitchen and its overlord Gordon Ramsay.

Paleon really deserves more attention. It's still in alpha, but quite playable. It's a colony sim, essentially Dawn of Man with additional age outside of only pre-history. It's updated regularly and a new one this week expanded on farming.


The combination of Rusty's 2021 GOTY thread and Sawyer releasing his mystery visual novel reminded me of this one. It's a card-battling, procedurally generated detective game. I know that previous sentence makes it sound like this is shit, but it actually comes together really well. Plus, unlike Sawyer's game there really is a guilty party in each run. There's plenty of C&C, side quests, and combat.

And is it a different party in each run? I played the demo some years ago, and it seems like the only details that were actually procedurally generated were NPC and location names, while the main plot went through all the same beats every time.

For new comers and the unspecting naive lurkers who found the dex ,the list is more of a warning to never ever try any of this shit, so his free platformer wont hurt anyone. Not a single title i would advise to really try here since the beggining of the thread. Dont waste your money none of them deserve attention.

Dungeon Rushers

I greatly enjoyed Dungeon Rushers, despite the mediocre reviews. Good combat AND good dungeon crawling elements (traps, etc) that require smart use of character skills. When exploring a level you have to balance combat ability with general utility. Some abilities deal with traps, other help you avoid combat or weaken enemy groups before combat starts. The tone is not serious and the dialogue is pretty silly but still enjoyable.

If you like blobber style combat with front/back lines and no character movement you probably don't run into games that cater to you often.

Along the same lines, two more RPGs I've enjoyed that almost nobody knows or talks about:

Astronarch

Party based roguelike/autoattack game. Fairy difficult until you get the hang of it. The joys are in finding overpowered item/class combos that are usually not obvious to new players. Greatly rewards experimentation.

Sin Slayers
Nothing says obscure like modern(ish) game that got taken off Steam due to some developer drama (I don't remember what happened). GOG still sells it for 20 bucks or so.

A roguelite with turn based team combat, although limited to 3 characters. You died and ended up in some weird dimesnion, hiding in a church. You can go out with a party to clear out zones (which are repeatable). Beating bosses advances the plot, and gives you access to new areas & new quests and opportunities to get better equipment.

Like the previous two you make up your own party and like Dungeon Rushers you find more characters as you advance through the game, which involves killing Demon Sins like Lust and Gluttony. This game is a little more simple than the previous two (although it's not necessarily easier), although it does have a Sin mechanic similar to Darker Dungeon's light levels, where certain actions will increase sin, which increases both rewards and difficulty. Like Dungeon Rush characters have map level abilities they can use to detect traps, scout, etc.
