@Zed I disagree about the '-'. It looks too much like a line of code without it. You need that extra bit of separation. Don't see what spoken or unspoken lines have to do with it.

Because '-' is used in literature to indicate spoken lines when "" is not used.

Are you guys really going to argue about the '-' sign? I mean, I know whole threads were built on attention to really insignificant details, here on The Codex, but this thing is bound to take the cake.

EDIT: even if I planned it, I would not be able to get a better punchline than the two posts below.

Why do game developers always choose completely idiotic names for cities and locations?

In George Ziets' own words, "Defiance Bay is the capital and largest city in the Dyrwood, gateway to the riches of Glanfath, teeming with adventurers and explorers from all over the region. Defiance Bay is a city of the common people, where the most prominent and respected citizens are self-made men. It stands at the forefront of experimentation in soul magic and exemplifies the age of discovery."

Nobody names their city Defiance Bay.

Why is a silvery tooth strange? What makes a smile fat?
They could be specifying that the tooth is both strange and silvery.
What is strange about the tooth though? Just because it's silver? I want you to go ask the writer, right this instant.
What I mean is that the two properties don't have to be related. If I said I had a small red car, you wouldn't ask why is a red car small.

Nobody names their city Defiance Bay.

It's named Defiance Bay because the city resisted a massive siege of the north-northwestern Ka'l-myrnu Empire like no other city, forcing them to a shameful retreat after the city has been relieved by the Baneful Tyrants sorcerer guild in 665 B.E.B.E.Q.
Also the city's permissive politics concerning cutting edge soul research that is in conflict with the Epire's embargo who view them as immoral, solidified this city name.

All problems originate from the fact that they went with a variation of the crappy Baldur's Gate formula and completely ignored the much more appealing and obviously superior style of Planetescape: Tournament:

Dashes (seperated from the names with spaces) and quotation marks for NPC lines, numbers, dots (rather than colons) and quotation marks for player lines.

Also, note the monocled text colouring. That is some quality work right there.

Yeah, Torment used more of a novel-like format, with all dialogue in quotes and frequent descriptions of actions/characterization sandwiching the dialogue. Not sure why that never caught on, it was one of my favorite elements of the game--oh right, it's all voice-acted now.

Whoever did the level design on the midland U.S. should be ashamed of themselves for the lack of originality.

Whatever. Defiance Bay is still lame.
