The last big pool for voting on codex's top crpgs was in 2019, it surprises me that from there to now we still didnt have a thread judging if the prestigious list is any good or not

So here it is, rate each of the Top 10 games and leave your shitty or monocled takes below.

As for me:

PS:T - 6/10: The writing is strong, characters are cool, party is very fleshed out, setting is rather unique and the conflict regarding TNO is quite fascinating, shame the combat is so bad and the system is so dumbed down compared to BG1/2 to the point you only have 4 classes to choose from when it comes to your PC. some quests are cool and related to TNO's memory loss and past, but the gameplay in most are quite simplistic and the narrative ends up being quite short, none have the puzzle solving quality of Fo's quests and the itemization doesnt help since most items are related to combat and almost none are for non-lethal gameplay or skill manipulation, while combat is quite rare and much worse than any other I.E game (mind you that most builds wont work in this game, try high AC dodger and fail miserably). its decent, althought DE made it a bit obsolete.

Fallout - 8/10: Cool setting, Well written main plot and decent quests. People hate combat, i always thought it was fun, minus the stupid party members ofc. exploration was always a big part of this title and finding out new locations full of lore and weird individuals was a really cool thing. the biggest pro here is probably how most places add at least a bit to the full picture of the setting and overall conflict. You see radscorpions being a problem in shady sands, ghouls being weak and begging you to let them have their water, people fighting themselves in boneyard,etc... just to reach at the end and see the master present a solution to end problems such as radiation sickness, human conflict and such.. it feels really well thought out, its also quite replayable as a bunch of different playstyles are supported.

Some skills are unbalanced, the reputation system doesnt work, combat-related itemization is rather weak and some locations feel rather lackluster in terms of content, but overall its a great game and quite easy, so its an ok introduction to older CRPGS.

BG2 - 7/10: They nerfed archers which is a very necessary thing compared to BG1 in which archers = win, i liked the plot althought irenicus is a pussy compared to Sarevok and i also enjoyed the more talkative party compared to the repetitive placeholder dialogue in the original. Encounter design was good and itemization is as good as in the OG, even tho unique weapons are more frequent (i liked the scarcity in 1), CnC was an improvement, theres move reactivity and its just overall a better game.

Arcanum - 5/10: Never got the hype with this one. Itemization is its biggest pro inside and outside of combat, setting was the second biggest pro, the main story is rather weak and forgettable. The villain has a really dull motivation, most of the plot points feel barely related to my character and i couldnt give a fuck to the whole Dwarf clan conflict, the game peaks rather early in Tarant with its huge reactivity and much like Fallout 2's new reno, the whole "live your life" vibe was great, questing offered opportunities for pretty much every character build and it was quite fun while it lasted. After it the game has a huge difficulty spike with BMM. Dungeons are also annoying since combat is bad and they are often quite long, the ruleset is quite bad and i hate that it gives you 1 point per level instead of making you feel like progression actually matters.

All in all, it had potential, but the story is weak, combat is shitty, builds are very broken by nature it has a bunch of dungeon crawling in a game that has shitty combat (the worst aside from Morrowind) and its so damn unpolished i cant understand its hype. it doesnt even have the more sparse plot structure of Fo1/2, its more of a branching path kind of game.

VTMB - 2/10 : shit is unplayable, combat is bad, quest design is ok, plot is quite mindless satire, the second half of the game is very dull and full of combat segments and i wasnt impressed with the characters. it would score higher if it had atleast decent itemization/economy or was more polished. as it is, its unplayable without fan patches so i have no idea what this is doing in a top 10.

Fallout 2 - 9/10: Aside from the story being weaker than in the OG and some locations feeling more Thematic rather than this one huge thing. This one did pretty much every other thing better. CnC is better, characterization is a huge thing even for non talking heads, Party members are more memorable, combat itemization is better (big guns are now worth a damn), skills are more balanced and overall its much cooler to roleplay at this game due to the high reactivity and bunch of freedom/options it presents. Quest design is better too Modoc/slags, The jet vaccine, Gecko powerplant and The reno families's questlines being standouts.

Fallout NV - 6/10: Main story is great, i like the CnC, itemization is the best the series ever had and its quite cool in a lot of areas. but the engine being shitty, the combat being trash and the ammount of unpolished mechanics bring it down considerably. all in all, i wouldnt replay more than my 2 playtroughts but it might be fun if you somehow manage to endure the garbage engine oh and the mostly hiking-based side quests.

Deus ex - 5/10: It tries a bunch of things, it doesnt excel in any of them, particularly, it has a skill system, but skills arent that important, it tries to be a fps/rpg but the gunplay is bad. it tries to be a conspiracy story, but instead of making me interested in the setting and its misteries by slowly revealing everything piece by piece as Age of decadence does, it throws its concept at your face in the very first scene, it tries to be a stealth-like game but the stealth mechanics are awful,etc... its not particularly good, i like its two reboots better

Gothic 2 - Never finished G2, therefore i dont have an opinion.

Morrowind - 2/10: Lol, almost unplayable, theres even anything aside from the loot that is good in this game?

people believe in these shitty lists? half of the games don't belong there, and none with actually good pnp-style combat, fucking pool of radiance has better tactical combat than any game on that list

Its truth tho, SS2 tries much less and ends up as a tighter and more concise experience

Deus ex is pretty much a "squeeze everything into a game" kind of experience

There are some valid points that not all of these games are goty.

Arcanum: Finished the game only once. I replayed it 4-5 times and dropped it after finding the dwarf clan's fate. It gets boring very fast.
Deus Ex: never finished, tried 3-4 times, dropped it in China town or earlier.
Morrowind: Tried it 3-4 times, dropped after 10 hours every time. The game sets you no goals whatsoever.

Deus Ex I believe simply didn't age well. The other two are bad at giving you the motivation to go on.

All other titles I completed 2-5 times each, no complaints.

The jet vaccine
The jet vaccine so you can do drugs with impunity, the unlimited hookers with kinks, losing your ass on a bet and getting pounded by a mutant, the pornography, whoring yourself out (as a female) during quests, gay marriage, this game is really the apogee of what we nowadays consider civilizational decline. But it's presented as a fun decline, with no critique. Is this the world young rebellious Californians dreamed of at the time? They got it, and it's not as fun as they thought.

It's ironic that F1 was made by a fag dev who went for something serious, but it's F2 that is filled with poz to the gills.

Even with your complaints, some of which are very valid, a 6/10 is way too low for a game with such strong writing. Arguably the best story in any RPG ever.

Thing is, you rate Chrono trigger as one of the best RPGs ever, and Chrono Trigger has combat which is just as bad if not worse. Chrono Trigger requires literally baby-level tactics and strategies to succeed, and if you equip the right items the game plays itself (the Ruby armour essentially turns most boss fights into auto-plays). Chrono Trigger also has baby-level puzzle solving too. So how you forgive Chrono Trigger but down mark Planescape Torment is just daft.

Same thing can be said for a lot of your complaints against Deus Ex.

Did you add FNV in an edit or did my mind skip over it, because of how much I hate this shit?

FNV is the worst of the offenders. The boringness of dialogues and the ugliness of the piss yellow world cannot be overstated.

Narrative issues, like the protag gets amnesia, but it's like he never existed in the world despite that amnesia. Even in VTMB a chick runs into you once who's your friend from the former life. In here, it's a lame attempt to simulate "vault dweller ignorance" that doesn't work.

Main plot? You got shot, but survived. Count your blessings and move on with your life. Zero motivation to investigate it.

Just like VTMB suffered from "let's mix RPG and shooter", FNV is dog shit in the gunplay department, just like Morrowind and Skyrim and all those who ever attempted it. Should've just gone for Far Cry itemization and RPG-style upgrades to character.
Instead we get off a sniper headshot on a guy without a helmet through player skill, but he doesn't die. What's more, he's suddenly running towards you in the night as if he'd even know where you are.

You can't make two steps without some radscorps or flies attacking you, like in a shitty mmo. Where's my feeling of emptiness of a dead world, loneliness? Another huge fail.

What abstract stuff used to work in F1/2, like random encounters with aggro bandits without a dialogue, simply doesn't work in a 3d game. Why are they attacking immediately? Not even attempting to intimidate you, or let you intimidate them? In F2, you can imagine how the encounter went and it escalated into a fight. In a 3d game, nothing is left to the imagination, but at the same time no rationale is provided for their suicidal & mindless aggression.
And the way they act stupid in gunfights with their shitty strafe and crouches that don't hide them at all is so stupid it's painful and kills any suspension of disbelief.

It's a 0/10 game, no exaggeration. If it was made in F2 engine, it would've been a mediocre overhaul mod.

Mostly I agree with this rating. Except I consider PS:T a timeless masterpiece, comparable in quality to the original Fallouts, and also think Morrowind deserves much better then that.

step outside the hive for the first time in twenty years, bucko. this game consistutes more than just passing wis/int checks to drown in xp. it's also a mind-bogglingly boring infinity engine game which manages to play worse than low level baulders

I think 6/10 is fair for this one if you're rating it as a CRPG. It's honestly more like an adventure or a visual novel than it is a CRPG. My biggest problem with it is that the Nameless One doesn't really say much whereas everyone else seems to want to talk for hours. There's way too many times that you'll read a wall of text only to be presented with the dialog choices of "Go on." or "I've heard enough."
Fallout -
Easily 8 out of 10, if not higher. It was probably one of the first CRPGs that demonstrated a single character game where you have multiple ways of doing things. Sure, there's some skills that don't have much of a use, especially after the removal of the towns falling to Supermutants. But overall, Fallout did a lot of things that ruined me for other CRPGs.
Hated the first one, probably played it for an afternoon and just stopped. I got it right after playing through Fallout and Fallout 2 and was expecting more like that with a D&D setting and co-op. Like I said, Fallout ruined me for a lot of CRPGs. Tried BG2 for about an hour or so, and took a hard pass. I also didn't care much for how the game just tossed magic items at you. It was like playing D&D with a DM that's 14 years old and tosses loot at you so you'll like him.
Arcanum -
Arcanum was a bit of a mess. Part of it is because Interplay kept suing Troika thinking they were making something "too close" to Fallout. So, the character system was a bit of a mess. Also, Sierra insisted on real time combat while Troika wanted turn based, so you ended up getting a mish-mash of both. Sierra also wanted multiplayer, which lead to some odd decisions. There's also the problem of being a completionist and smacking that level cap early. The world itself was pretty awesome, though. It also had multiple paths for doing quests, which is what I tend to look for since Fallout. 7/10.
Bloodlines is all about the world as well. The character system wasn't bad, and it also has multiple ways of doing things. The dialog was fantastic, particularly the clan specific stuff. The combat starts off fairly mediocre but gets more interesting as you gain levels and abilities. Although, I did manage to get stuck a few times using Celerity. I will say that the Haunted House was great your first time through, but it's a one trick pony. Also, the game kind of goes downhill in Chinatown. 7/10.
Fallout 2 -
6/10. It's a great example of quantity over quality. Also, it was very rushed and they mostly just let the designers do what they wanted. There's too much "rule of cool" in this one and kind of waters down the setting. For some reason, they wanted to retcon the Supermutants being sterile, which they later retconned again after that? The Enclave was a weak antagonist compared to The Master.
Fallout NV -
8/10. Without a doubt, the best of the 3D Fallout games. Fallout 3 and Fallout 4 are not even close. It's the only one that doesn't have glaring plot and lore issues. It's not overly goofy, it expands on the original two games, ties up some loose ends, and so on. They also added Traits back to the character system.
Deus ex -
I hate stealth in games, and Deus Ex is like of like Henry Ford's statement of "You can have a Ford in any color you want as long as it's black." when it comes to stealth. Tried it a few times, realized they really want you to do stealth, and I dropped it. 3/10.
Gothic 2 -
You have to do a lot to make me like third person action combat. A lot more than Gothic did. I was willing to push forward with Mount & Blade despite the action combat because it offered a Hell of a lot that no other CRPG had ever offered, but not so with Gothic. Therefore, I passed on Gothic 2.
Morrowind -
Morrowind is fucking awesome. The factions are great. The story is great. The lore building is great. It's the start of Bethesda stripping down the character system after Daggerfall, but they have yet to gut it.

PS:T - 5/10. I hate IE and I'm not that impressed by Avellone's writing, which is way too verbose at times. I liked this more when I was younger but honestly I think that's just because I was "meant" to like it.

Fallout - 9/10. Really well-paced and focused game. The combat is decent enough to last the short length of the game, especially given that you might not encounter much of it. The game didn't need any sequels and shouldn't have spawned a franchise.

BG2 - 3/10. Again, I hate IE and RTWP, not a fan of BioWare's writing at all. This one's just not for me, I see why other people like it.

Arcanum - 6/10 but it's been a very long time since I played it. Rating comes almost entirely from the setting, the actual act of playing the game sucks. I think if I played it again right now I'd probably rate it lower.

VTMB - 6/10, don't mind the jank.

Fallout 2 - 6/10. About 30% of is really good, another 30% is decent, another 40% is bad.

Fallout NV - 8/10, though I think the Legion are really shitty antagonists, and that the writers for this game really sucked at writing engaging dialogue outside a few notable characters.

Deus Ex - 9/10, only loses points because some of the later levels like the ocean lab are nowhere near as tight as the earlier levels. The individual systems all kind of suck but they come together really well.

Gothic 2 - can't remember enough of it to rate it

Morrowind - 7/10. The world is great and a lot of the groundwork is there but the total lack of NPC reactivity lets it down badly, as does the quest design which is almost universally bad. I hate the MW/Oblivion levelling system too.
