What gets me is not even the GAAS part. Everything about this game screams the opposite of Rocksteady's previous game design principles. Yes, there's plenty to critisise, yes you could do things differently. But when they designed Asylum its still clear they spent an extensive amount of time on the setting and charachters both narratively and gameplay wise

That's what made the original Asylum even appealing, because you usually didn't see that amount of care put into a superhero game at the time.

This somehow is the complete opposite and looks like the developers gave less of a shit than your random shovelware developer in 2000.

Imo the only way to make a compelling Superman game would be to either depower him (red sun would be a more elegant solution than kryptonite) or send him somewhere with beings roughly as powerful as he (the 4th world seems a good choice)
However the impression I get from supes fanboys is they seem to view both approaches as lazy and uninspired

Looks like every generic zoomershit garbage game of the last few years. It's all a formless pulp of shit.

Arkham Asylum was the only "ok" game in the entire series. But I can't even think fondly of it because its awful autocombat infected so many other games over the years.

Curious to see how it does commercially though. I was certain Avengers would be a success based on brand strength alone even though it looked like garbage in every preview, and was pleasantly surprised when it flopped hard. Ditto Gotham Knights. Both titles’ sales performance have me feeling cautiously optimistic that we might have reached the saturation point for capeshit.

It's a loot game like Destiny where the 'kill' missions are 4 player strikes. Why would anyone expect otherwise?

Why is everyone is on super speed and jumping higher than Superman? WTH

You should see Arkham Knights. Batgirl can glide like Batman, Nightwing can whip out his Fortnite hang glider, Robin can fucking teleport because he reverse engineered the Watchtower teleporter and Red Hood was given the ability to double jump by his dip in the Lazarus Pit.

I thought you guys were just being edgy, then I started to watch one of the videos. Holy shit.

It's like these guys read my mind. If I play superhero IP game, what I'm looking for is double jumping, circle strafing, Souls-rolling, machine gunning action. It's like Unreal Tournament with DC skins. Just why?

Also, I don't know much about these characters, I know some of them use guns, but how often does Harley go rolling around with a minigun? I thought she was more about stuff like bats and oversized hammers.

Anyway, I'm impressed. This looks worse than I imagined. That's hard to do these days.

They did the weapons thing so you can switch your guns betweel all four characters without issue, mostly because your choice of character isn't limited by your playstyle. As for the characters themselves:

- Harley Quinn has used a lot of firearms and wacky melee weapons over the years. She's a skilled acrobat and combatant, but not very bulky, so she could get away with most of the lighter stuff.
- Deadshot is one of the best assassins and marksmen in the world. He prefers accurate firearms, and in close combat he has his custom wrist-mounted guns. Basically anything but the heavy stuff goes with him.
- Captain Boomerang is a Flash villain, and good luck shooting the fastest man alive. The Rogues have varying degrees of no-kiling policies across various media, and it's pretty obvious what Captain Boomerang's weapon of choice is. So him using guns at all is a stretch, though he might have a wide arsenal of trick boomerangs to use.
- King Shark is... well, a goddamn shark man. His fingers are too big to use normal guns, so he'd need custom firearms. He's got the bulk to handle heavy stuff and I could see him use some kind of massive gague shotgun, but I don't see him using stuff like sniper rifles.

Basically Rocksteady pussed out and went for the profitable thing instead of, you know, doing something that makes sense.

I’m not trying to go full Rusty and say that any dev time longer than 18 months is due to lazy/incompetent devs, but that is a staggeringly long gestation, and suggests multiple very severe and very high-level fuck-ups. If this game underperforms (which seems likely) there is going to be a serious reckoning as to why that happened.

I remember that when Arkham Knight came out it was a terrible bug-ridden mess that Rocksteady wasn't allowed to immediately fix because of Warner Brothers Interactive, and the game got memed on for a long time because of this. If this game has the same issue paired with it being a live service looter shooter, it's going to be their end.

Also, remember that Avengers game from a while back that was going to be the next big thing and had a similar business plan? From september 30th onwards all support will cease. It'll still be online, but they won't look after it anymore.

Only the PC port of Arkham got memed. I'm pretty sure it's a marginal portion of their profits, if the console versions had the same issues then Rocksteady wouldn't be making games today.
Avengers bombed because of western Squeenix retardation.

I will concede they retained the 80s comic aesthetic. Bright blue for the boomerang guy, looks neat.
Edit: you guys better get used to SAAS applied to games though. Tech companies LOVE that shit. They do it because they can't apply IOT shit to software but if they could they would.

it was so bad that it got pulled from steam. and there also was some outsourcing stuff with chinese going on I forgot.

Add to that: none of these characters are known for flying, swinging, using jet packs, etc. This gameplay just has nothing to do with any of them.

I admit I'm biased and want to believe in Rocksteady, but let's not pretend in the post-Kickstarter era that evil publishers aren't the ones fucking everything up. This would not be the first time Warner Bros. pushed their noses in like a derailed freight train crashing through reinforced concrete and said something like "Let's do the thing that is money because money. Can we have RMT loot boxes? The kids love loot boxes. And jumping a lot! What about guns, make sure there are lots of loud guns. No this isn't stupid enough, you have to add in game billboards you click on to give us money."

I guess a bunch of important creative people left Rocksteady so maybe the leftovers are indeed the jerks here; still, that's not the first place I'm inclined to point fingers.
