Didn't want to start a new thread so I hope you don't mind the slight necro. Thread's still in the morgue, hasn't gone underground yet I suppose.

I just wanted to bring up that I think Shadow of the Colossus sucks ass. The remake at least earns points for how pretty it looks, but the gameplay is literally just roaming around an empty overworld forever to finally find a boss that you defeat by exploiting its one gimmick. I heard so many people talking it up, that it was one of the greatest PS2 games of all time, and I played the PS3 remaster and was like... wtf is everyone talking about? Then I looked at gameplay for the PS2 version and holy shit that thing runs at like 10 FPS. It looks like it plays horribly. The story is either nonexistent or extremely pretentious. It's impressive that a small team was able to make something like that for the PS2 of all things, sure, but it's the last PS2 game I'd actually want to sit down and play. I think a lot of people may have played it when they were younger so their brain sort of filled in the gaps.

And, for the opposite side of the coin, a game that I like that everyone else hates. DmC Devil May Cry. Yeah, the failed reboot. It has by far the best hack and slash gameplay I've ever experienced and the soundtrack is unbelievable. The story and dialogue are a little cringe sometimes, sure, and people didn't like that they took Dante and made him something else. I can understand that. The gameplay though man... the GAMEPLAY. It's so smooth and really intuitive. Better than DMC5 and way better than DMC 1-3. Haven't played 4 yet so I can't really comment on that. Better than Bayonetta, Dante's Inferno, God of War, you name it. DmC fucking slaps. If it were a completely different series I can see the reception to it being a lot better. Ninja Theory is too far up their own ass with Hellblade now though so I can't imagine anything else coming out of that team.

There's another one for ya, I hated Hellblade. The gameplay felt like busy work. The whole psychosis thing also just got extremely annoying to me after a while. It was a fun gimmick for a little bit, but it became like the trope of characters telling you exactly what to do in modern games all the time, while there was also a second character saying the opposite of what to do all the time. It broke me eventually man, and you can't even turn it off unless you turn off all the character voices so I went through the last 1/3 of the game with subtitles only. The cutscenes with real people being mixed in was also just really weird, no idea why they went with that design decision but it just turned me off a bit. I seem to recall that they took a few liberties with Norse mythology too, but I can't remember specifics.

mass effect andromeda was pretty fun and I'm upset that it got no DLC/probably won't get a sequel because there's really no other space opera RPGs
It's woke and repetitive, but still much better than The Witcher 3 (the most overrated game of all time?).

Enjoy the Revolution! Another revolution around the sun that is.
Battle Passes and cosmetics are not a problem in games, as none of them change gameplay. If you give money for virtual currency or some pixels in game I have bad news for you.

Roguelites can go and suck a big one. Most of them are boring slogs with almost no progression and are mostly created to specifically autistic gamers and content creators who will play the game for thousand of hours. (There are some good ones, but man it's so boooring).

Streamers and game content creators are fucking bane of gaming. They spoil everything instantly and game devs like to suck on their dicks for views and exposure.

MGS should have ended after MGS2 (as Kojima originally planned), though I am sympathetic to the view that MGS declined after MGS3.
MGS4 and everything after it went into the realm of the truly stupid.
I find MGS4's soap-opera levels of melodrama particularly obnoxious.

I'm replaying Pool of Radiance, so here's another:

PoR is pretty middling. It's fun but the combat is very simple and the encounter design is all too often total shit, just thirty guys rushing you at once while your whole party stands in a doorway to bottleneck them. It's all pretty easy too, which is the worst part.

It's not a bad game but Scorpia was right to call out the boring-ass encounters at the time, the combat isn't anywhere near complex or engaging enough to justify the amount of it you end up doing. jRPG-tier game design.

The art design is a problem too; I like the graphics themselves (especially the fucked up freak of nature party portraits) but I forgot how dull it is exploring the towns where everything's empty and looks exactly the same. Compare it with like the Final Fantasy games from the same time - or with Wasteland - and it's a night and day difference in visual design.

Wolfenstein 2009 STOMPS modern Wolfenstein games and is propably even moar fun than Wolf 3D / Spear of Destiny

Saturn > PSX - better fighting games, arcade perfect 2D ports, better arcade games, most of crucial multiplatforms are here, for each PSX exclusive there is a solid answer, Ridge Racer vs Daytona USA, Grand Turismo vs Sega Really, Crap Bandipoop vs NiGHTS Into Dreams, Tekken vs Virtua Fighter, Soul Calibur vs Last Bronx etc.

All Capcom fighting games since SF4 are extremely ugly

I like console limitations that give their games an unique touch e.g. blurry N64 graphics or metallic Sega Megadrive sound

Mortal Kombat vs DC is the most important fighing game of last 15 years and it's the main reason for MK9 and Injustice to exist

Doom Eternal is on pair with '90 classics as it is basically a Quake 3 Arena single player mode we never had

Easily. Wolf 2009 is sub-par and yet still better than almost every professionally made FPS made in the past 20 years, because they're almost all terrible. As for 3D, that game is redundant. It's Doom v0.5.

Nice opinion bro, but you're completely off. Both racing and fighting are shallow middle-tier genres anyway, if you're into those, sure maybe. For survival horror, RPG, platformer, action games of varied style, vehicular combat, stealth, PC and arcade ports + more, there is no substitute console for the PS1. There's approximately 50 games I adore on that machine, significantly more than any another console.

True, there is a lot of multiplatform crossover with PS1, but definitely not enough to catch up. The fact it was discontinued in 1998 is testament to that. Missing any aspect of the late 90s (and the year 2000 which was also pure greatness) is highly unfortunate.

Yes.

Absolutely. I like PC limitations too e.g Midi music. Basically, 90s = good.

Mortal Kombat vs DC is the most important fighing game of last 15 years and it's the main reason for MK9 and Injustice to exist

Interesting. Though it's still a fighting game at the end of the day. Mid-tier.

Doom Eternal is on pair with '90 classics as it is basically a Quake 3 Arena single player mode we never had

Doom Eternal is definitely among the tiny list of legendary modern games but still a little compromised, never forget. I don't agree but it probably is top 10 FPS material, which is an amazing accomplishment for an arena shooter. Also with no mod tools, it can never be as eternal as doom. If it had mod tools, oh boy. It would put modern devs out of the job as people would go nuts as they did the original.

Ok
What is the Saturn's answer for:
  • Metal Gear Solid
  • Tenchu 2
  • Resident Evil DC
  • Resident Evil 2
  • Silent Hill
  • Final Fantasy Tactics
  • Final Fantasy 9
  • Dragon Quest 7
  • Chrono Cross
  • Symphony of the Night
+at least 20 more unique solid entries not available on Saturn. I'll list some less-known stuff. Ever played Silent Bomber? Bloodlines? Hogs of War? Parasite Eve? Vigilante 8? Vagrant Story? Also he mentioned arcade ports, Saturn doesn't have G-darius like the PS1, one of the best Arcade games of all.
And many more I will not bother to list because nobody cares or understands. 90s video game prestige is dying history. You just don't get games like the above anymore. At all.

Saturn dying out in 1998 is its biggest weakness. 1999-2000 are just as important years of the golden age as 1994-1998. The playstation killed it with its vast unparalleled catalogue (and marketing).

One thing though, Saturn did have Symphony of the Night. If I recall, Saturn was the initial release/target platform for that.

Look, I think the PS1 & Saturn are about on par with each other, both great in different ways, but at least make a fucking effort. You've literally asked him to put forward the answer for some games.....which the Saturn has in it's library....

Symphony of the Night is available on Saturn (in Japan) with even more content than the PS version (playable Maria).
Final Fantasy Tactics could be matched by Dragon Force.

Saturn is a great system, but yeah, as far as libraries go, Saturn (or the N64 for that matter) can't compete with Playstation. Saturn has a better library of 2D fighters/action games and shoot em' ups and maybe lightgun games with Virtua Cop 1 & 2 and that's about it, in 3D games Saturn loses, badly.

If we're gonna get pedantic and bitchy, to be fair, he listed resident evil directors cut. Why I don't know, as it is the worst version, but anyone pro PS1 is cool by me and in the right. Absolute best console of all time and it isn't even close.

Gotta strongly disagree with the action game part. Don't make me geek out and list more games!

2D action games was my point. Saturn has Guardian Heroes and that alone goes a long way. ;)

Edit: The vast majority of Saturn games (75%!!!) were never released outside of Japan where it had little over 1,000 games released so that also affects Saturn's legacy in the rest of the world.

Ah. Then yeah, most likely. Psychon (one of many p. cool Net Yaroze indie games), Symphony of the Night, some PC ports like Overboard or Crusader: No Remorse, Metal Slug (meh), Megaman X (meh). And more. Some good 2D games on the system but Saturn surely wins.

Technically a lot of PS1 games that are never thought of to be 2D are predominantly that (e.g Resident Evil games. Also saturn doesn't have RE3 for that matter. 1998 death is critical to its inadequacy), but whatever. Everything you see is 2D except yourself and enemies, and level design is almost always flat X & Y axis action.

As much as I like to play the contrarian, and a lot of the games mentioned I can't stomach now, PS1 is GOATed. Probably my favorite 3D console. Saturn has a certain charm, but PS1 was just hitting from all kinds of directions. Saturn is something you get later at discount as a second console to geek out on very Japanese, niche games, like Radiant Silvergun, Burning Rangers, etc. Also great for lovers of 2D animation.
