Sure thing:

I now officially hate black people and will never, ever tolerate them in my games.

Priest is a must, and it also helps that it's the best written character in the entire game, so that's an easy pick. I'd also recommend Kana the chanter because his summons saved me during the Adra dragon fight and some other tough encounters. Everything else depends on your preference.

BTW, this isn't like Baldur's Gate where i have to take a rogue, right?

I'm looking at the list of companions and i'll be definitely taking the Avellone ones, the both of them. The Figther dude sounds interesting. Aloh is giving me Sand vibes but probably it's just the portrait that makes me think of that. The rest is whatever until i get a chance to see what they are.

Definitely avoiding that black wombyn Paladin. Fuck you Sawyer.
Any class can learn disarm traps because Sawyer. The only rogue companion is deep in the DLC anyway.

I mean with a tank Pala+Eder you'll be just fine without a priest.
Yes, but good luck with Lilith and spectres in that case.

It's worth having Durance just for the banter alone.

rogues will always have slightly better mechanics than everyone else but chanters are a close second, so Kana is fine for 99% of checks

btw, Éder and Aloth have the same voice actor, which makes party banter funnier if you imagine it's just the same guy arguing with himself

Fond memories of getting to the end of a dungeon and the villain was also voiced by Matt Mercer. There were three Matt Mercers all arguing with each other, best part of the game.

Well, Devotions of the Faithful is quite broken. Consecrated Ground is pretty great for healing. Plus I think there was a very nice upgrade to the "free" priest aoe ability... Painful Interdiction, I think?

Playing without a priest is like a completely different game. Priests are so mandatory that you'll be crafting everything possible to simulate having one. It's not the most ideal balance tbh.

Priests are essential for those blanket immunity buffs alone, and being able to spontaneously cast from the entire spell book makes them useful in almost all situations.
Ciphers are also very strong with spammable AoE damage+CC.
Too bad both classes got "balanced" in Deadfire.

On one hand, I agree. I also lament the balancing of PoE Barbarian for example.

On the other, I understand that the addition of multiclassing made that necessary.
Broken, sick combos are still possible in Deadfire. Actually with multiclassing and better itemization - moreso then in PoE1.

But I agree, some single classes became less exciting and unique.

I almost never used consecrated ground because it was difficulty to play Durance as melee. As soon as I get Kana, his arquebus goes to Durance and Kana uses a war bow for the rest of the game. That way, Durance can be set to auto attack from the back line and occasionally cast. Playing him in melee just makes him die all the time, despite some recommendations to play him like that (even with long reach weapons like quarterstaff). What weapon did you guys use on him?

I never played Pillars of Eternity 2; is it worth playing it in turn-based mode?

You can have some fun as a caster, as they are strong in Turn Based mode, particularly wizards (lots of free action buffs), even more so Assasin Spellblades (get huge boosts when casting from Stealth, can be undetectable-untouchable during enemy rounds), such as Human (nice bonuses from Fighting Spirit when Blooded) Blood Mage Assassins (Blood Sacrifice to recover spellslots is also a Free Action - also an easy way to get Blooded in round 1).

But turn based mode ignores many mechanics of real time and is basically a butchered system, lazily patched together by some interns over a weekend or so.

If you're going to bother, just bite the bullet and play RTwP. Save yourself 20-30 hours. This isn't Knights of the Chalice or even Secret of the Silver Blades; you're not depriving yourself of a glorious TB system.

i'm struggling to learn the system. I don't know why shit just doesn't want to stick into my brain.
Its 1d100 the system bro, just pump the numbers you absolutely need to the detriment of everything else and you will be fine, all rounders will just come up short in everything.
Play with a party of cripples that each can do 1 thing and you will succeed, you dont need 5 dudes to barely fail at everything, but 5 dudes that succeed at one important thing each and just have them do that one thing the entire game.
