Edit: to make a comparison, the Star Trek movies only won one Academy Award: Star Trek (2010), for Best Makeup.
star trek's effort has always been on tv, not cinema, and also was on a completely different kind of budget and we all know how much money weights on oscar nominations.
In recent iterations, the story is a vehicle for duels.

Rogue One is dogshit, avoid like the plague and don't believe anyone who says that it's decent.

I think people just think it's the best of a bad bunch. But that's setting the bar really low in a franchise that also has TFA, TLJ and the final one whose name I can't even remember because it's so inconsequential and meaningless.

Solo is an inoffensive and competently made adventure flick that can be enjoyed even if you're not a fan of Star Wars.

Rogue One is a badly paced mess, with the first half being boring and latter half being utterly incoherent. It is also full of shitty references and cameos, "look, we have CGI Grand Moff Tarkin! Look, we have Darth Vader! etc etc".

I should have watched Solo just for Phoebe Waller-Bridge's droid character but I never made it that far. I generally hate SW shite, but I have a thing about (not) watching films where the predictable ending goes beyond being telegraphed into something that's almost a kind of cinematic determinism, however I watched I Care A Lot all the way through even if I saw the ending within the first 3-5 minutes of the film due to the terrible screenwriter who was bereft of any kind of innovation, imagination or talent outside of having the 2 main characters intentionally being total, evil cunts.

Rogue One sucks. Character development is non-existent and the plot is executed in the most uninspired, uninteresting way possible. It’s telling that people think the Darth Vader scenes are the best parts of the movie, because these are pure fan-service moments that are superfluous to the actual story. If you want high budget fanboy porn, you might enjoy it, but if you’re wanting a movie with actual characters and an interesting plot, look elsewhere.

I think the writers didn't bother with character development since everyone not part of the OT dies at the end. I enjoyed the movie because it had what I want in my SW derived products, as is a group travelling across a few different planets and having various adventure there. But I felt that it hewed to close to the first SW, unlike Solo, which took more risks, but still managed to be predictable

I've heard this excuse before but it really makes no sense to me.

If the point of the movie is that these characters all sacrifice themselves at the end for the Rebel cause, then all the more reason to develop them as characters so that the audience actually gives a shit when they die. If the writers didn't even care enough to give them characterization then why am I even watching? It could have been Jan Jyn and 5 random rebel soldiers and it wouldn't have made a difference.

Besides, there are some character moments that are clearly meant to be emotional and impactful - they just fall flat because they feel so unearned. So I don't believe this was a deliberate choice to have no character development, I just think they were lazy. If they really intended for this to not be character-focused then there is no reason for the first half of the movie to exist.

And it's not like the plot makes up for lack of interesting characters, because there's nothing clever or unexpected there either. You say Solo was predictable but it at least tried for some twists and turns to its story. Rogue One couldn't even be bothered to go through the motions. The visuals are nice, but there's no substance to anything that's happening.

I don't disagree that the writers were lazy in regards to to the character development, just saying that they were lazy because it was an unconnected one-shot with all the new characters dying.
Though I kinda appreciated the characters outside of Jyn, which was too bland, but the rest was alright

Except for a few of the games and books Star Wars is gay as fuck. Yes, even the original trilogy. And all of you are giant fags for having so much to say about the movies.

So I decided to finish the game. I stopped playing previously when being close to the final boss. Fighting a final boss here is a bizarre experience. It's certainly better designed than most of the game. Boss have a wide assortment of moves at her disposal which is in stark contrast with the rest of enemies/bosses that have only a few. The fight is difficult and pretty enjoyable. The problem here is that the battle is quite janky. I am 100% sure that if the game was made by indie team everyone would complain about how janky that battle is. Examples:

-There are a few attacks that it's difficult to properly assess their range and they do big damage
-There is an indefensible attack that make you fall to the ground. Boss can follow up on it with other attacks, essentially stunlocking player to death
-There is a segment when the battle is being stopped and an imperial probe comes and you have to parry its bolts and lightsaber throws. I feel this destroy pacing of the battle and kills player flow.
-There is a ground shaking attack, which is easy to jump when its initiated on middle range, but when boss initiate it when you are near her and you are starting you attack animation it's often indefensible
-Battle is a little too long and grindy. Boss have a little too much health.
-The "time slows down when you hit enemy that killed you" is annoying when you battle a difficult boss. This should be removed during boss battles, especially that the yellow grows obscures red glow of attacks that can't be parried.
-The game is about parrying, so the final boss should test everything you have learned so far about parring. In reality, the best way of fighting her is to keep her at the middle range and wait for openings.

I just finished this game. It was quite irritating overall.

The level design has some moments, but I expected more variety than ice slide becoming mud slide. Yay Jedi surfer.

The minimap is the worst. What a shitty job of execution, and no way to mark a point on the map was a special level of stupid. A very lazy way of padding player hours in game.

Quick-Time events.... oh for fucks sake.

Cal's power level started at shitbird, ended at barely competent Padawan, and had no choice at any point to embrace the dark side... I thought maybe there would be a choice on Ilum, but no.

Shitty Sekiro simulator, worse controls than Witcher 1, overrated trash.

It’s not great, but it’s way better than I would ever expect a AAA Star Wars game released in the modern era to be. Complaining about the power-level progression is pants-on-head-retarded though; it’s one of the few things that the design team completely nailed. If you want to be a super-hero in space The Force Unleashed games still exist.
