Post from Owlcat community manager on Reddit. Literally the same shit as the glorious BSN golden era. Meanwhile we've got the corporate stooge Owlcat_Eyler here spewing empty platitudes. "teheeee my fellow nerd friends we really like some good rpg mechanic nyah ?"

no gay companions and only 1 lesbian? outrageous

Owlcat recognizing that the Warhammer 40k audience is like ~98% straight guys (and transbians).

Romance being put at the forefront show Owlcat didnt get the appeal of Wh40k setting and just want to cater to the loud neo-Biodrone niche.

It looks to me like that information is there to shut up the "Who can I romance?" people. There are three, possibly four options and two-to-three are women.

Yeah sure, that's a convoluted 3d chess move to set themselves apart from BG3 and not blatant pandering to the romance tard crowd.
They don't need to "set themselves apart from BG3". BG3 is Forgotten Realms/DnD. Rogue Trader is Warhammer 40k. This alone is enough.

And, yes, it is "blatant pandering to the romance crowd". That was the whole point of my post when I brought up BG3. It doesn't cost them much to add some romances to the game, while also having the potential to attract some of that BioWare romance crowd. It's a win-win situation for them. So I think you're being fabulously optimistic by saying "this kind of pandering is one of reasons Bioware's product steadily declined in quality and the fact that it is now a dying brand", because it still seems to be going strong. If there is a reason why BioWare is a dying brand it ain't because of romances.

My take is that people either like them or don't give a shit about them.

Finding someone who can cook and clean for you?
Imagine someone stopping romances in RPGs at just holding hands while looking at a sunset, and maybe a kiss on the cheek from her to him, after he vanquished all the baddies?

First we'll have a stroke when we realize Romeo trespassed to see Juliet. Then we'll have a stroke when we realize he fell in love with her before even being near her.

What happened to us as human beings... ?

Why do modern gamedevs always make romances with the ugliest companions imaginable?

Like the only attractive woman here is Argenta and of course she's off-limits despite the lore saying that SoB being sluts (Emperor-approved ofc) is totally justifiable.

Now that I think about it, since there is no vow of chastity, Sororitas convents must be a lesbian's wet dream.

:shredder:

I want to go to the lesbian nun planet.

At least these companions seem more interesting than any of the (new) shit BG3 ones (I have not yet checked out if they destroyed Jaheira and Minsc as well).

As for romance, I full expect they have some tentacle porn options if you switch to Chaos.
For the anime fans of course ;)

What does this notion have to do with the quality of writing in RPGs, mediocrepoet?

Or is this you LARPing the nick?
You do your fucking/wooing outside the game is why.
This.
Wah, my video games lost the meaning of romance! Decline of civilization. Listen bitch, shut the games off, meet a girl who likes you, show her what romance means, then bone her so hard she forgets her fucking name. Whining on the Codex is such a fucking lame incel move.

with this and wotr owlcat is building a big tradition in offering absolute bottom of the barrel romance options, luckly i could care less about romance in a warhammer 40k setting.

Not sure what your point is, but romance is a terrible addition to games 99% of the time regardless if you are an incel or not.

It's just something that's there. You don't have to participate in it. The only reason it's getting such a big part of the spotlight is because it sells easier to non-gamer, non-warhammer normies.

Can anyone that's played the beta make a comment on the difficulty? Are the systems here as intricate as the ones in Pathfinder?

I think people these days have forgotten what the word "romance" means.
Please do elaborate. What does it mean? Having sex?

The problem with romance in RPGs is that is it really hard to pull off, because you need writing that'll attract the player to the NPC. And we know how bad writing fails to interest people, let alone make NPCs feel attractive to them. It is easier with pre-made characters. Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption is the last game I remember that did a good job. But that's because both Christof and Anezka are set characters and their voice actors were extremely good in their roles. They also fit very well in the whole narrative of pretty much the impossible love that intertwines with many other elements of the setting (what it means for the soul when you're a vampire, the test of your faith after being turned, etc.).

I can fill 60 paragraphs with my thoughts on this alone, but I'll keep it to mostly two sentences.

  • Writing romances for simps is super easy.
  • Writing a faceted romance for an intelligent human person is the height of craft.

Most games shouldn't have romances because 99% of the time it's cringe.

Romances themselves aren't a problem if they're a small part of the game and easily ignorable for those who don't want them. It only becomes an issue once a studio gets a reputation for including them and people who play games for that specifically get attracted to it since catering to them means those scenes take up a larger part of the game when those resources could be used more effectively somewhere else.

Significantly less complex, the build autists hate the game because they are actually forced to play the game instead of one-shotting everything with their broken nonsensicle builds. So that's a huge plus.

It's an impressive amount of seething the lack of an argenta romance is causing :smug:
