Watching that weirdo Asmongold on twitch, he spent $147 so far, took him like 5 min to reach lvl 10.

They're not even trying to compete with Path of Exile, which is the gold standard in the genre these days. And nobody has made a better single player offline ARPG than Grim Dawn. I like ARPGs, but nobody is making any worth playing anymore.

You only need one character. The next patch is adding multi-classing. If you're at max level and you decide to switch, you'll keep your max level but they'll give you starter endgame gear.

I'm sure it won't cost $5 to switch classes...

I played on a tablet but I'm guessing the pc version is not that different.
You can play with a gamepad which is good, on pc they support wasd movement for whatever reason.
The game looks and sounds like a cancelled Diablo 3 expansion.
The story is completely nonsensical, some known characters appear such as Cain and Xul. Imo they are completely out of character and only serve to promote this garbage.
The gameplay is somehow even more simplified than Diablo 3. Completely boring and not engaging in the slightest.
You can even make your character auto walk towards their destination.
Skills lack customization from what I've seen, your only decision is which ones to pick in your four slots.
Builds are tied to microtransactions.
For example you will get an armor piece with legendary gem slots but legendary gems, at least the good ones must be bought if you don't want to grind for hundreds of hours.
There are simpler gems that drop but here is another trick, gems have colors like in POE.
For example I had a blue gem and wanted to slot it.
But my slots were red so I could not.
Even more rng.
And gems don't give you abilities nor do they modify the ones you have like in POE, it's just stat bonuses.
Not to mention the lag.
Everything lags, from open world to instances, because the game is free and bots already farm everything that is farmable.
In a way it's faithful to the Diablo mythos because it drops you to the depths of hell with no hopes of ever escaping.

Apparently the reward for beating the first boss is the ability to buy an exclusive lootbox.
I imagine a lot of people going for it on the phone. If you have your card connected, its just one click, and you will feel the impulse to spend that dollar after the tension of fighting the boss.

I was listening to a Youtuber talk about the monetization in this and he was saying that the 60 orbs they get you for can't actually buy anything. It's just that with your card hooked up, you're like: yeah whatever. Then another hits and another, etc. and then maybe after that you're like: Fuck, I can't buy anything, so you pony up again to actually afford a thing.

He was also saying that basically all progress is linked to monetization which guts it because other than that it's actually a fun game that nails Diablo on your phone (YMMV).

Freemium games are cancer.
